EA has reportedly shelved Need for Speed, ending support for Speedhunters and marking a major blow to racing games in 2025.

2025 hasn’t been kind to racing game fans. Forza is going through a rough patch after the Xbox layoffs, WRC development has stopped entirely until it moves back to Nacon, and now Need for Speed, one of the most iconic racing franchises ever, has reportedly been shelved by EA. Along with it, Speedhunters, the car culture site it helped fund, has quietly gone dark too.

Need for Speed has been around since the 90s and played a major role in both gaming and car culture. It wasn’t just a game series. It had a movie, influenced a generation of car enthusiasts, and funded Speedhunters, a site dedicated to car photography and stories from around the world. You can say, it was a generation-defining game.

For months, fans noticed Speedhunters hadn’t posted anything new since April. Now we know why. Matthew Everingham, one of the site’s longtime contributors, confirmed on social media that EA has shelved the Need for Speed series. With that decision, funding for Speedhunters stopped as well.

 
 

While it’s not entirely surprising, the reality of it is still sad. Need for Speed may not have been in the spotlight recently (with forgettable entries even), but it’s been a staple of racing games for decades. Unlike WRC, which has a clear path back to Nacon, Need for Speed is EA’s own franchise. That means if EA shelves it, it’s likely done for the foreseeable future.

And Speedhunters, which had become a respected name in car culture, goes down with it. No farewell post, no announcement, just silence.

If this is really the end, it marks a quiet and unfortunate close to one of racing’s biggest names in gaming history.
