Digital Sun, the studio behind Moonlighter, has delayed the upcoming public Steam playtest for ReVamp to prevent artificial intelligence software from cloning the unreleased game.

- Digital Sun canceled the public Steam playtest for ReVamp over concerns regarding generative AI copycats reverse-engineering the game.
- The initial playtest has formally transitioned to a closed, invite-only format hosted on the official developer Discord server.
- ReVamp currently remains unpriced as the developer targets a March 2027 PC launch window.
Independent developer Digital Sun has officially announced it is delaying the upcoming Steam playtest for its upcoming vampiric “Tower Defensevania,” ReVamp, because the studio us concerned it could be copied by AI before the game releases.
Announcing the decision in a Steam blog post, Digital Sun has instead decided to move the game’s first playtest to Discord as it wants something more “contained” to prevent the ReVamp being “reverse-engineered” and cloned before it launches.
Why Did Digital Sun Cancel the ReVamp Steam Playtest?
Digital Sun canceled the public Steam playtest because the studio feared bad actors might use generative AI to reverse-engineer the “Tower Defensevania” mechanics and publish a clone.
The developer ultimately views an exposed public build as an unacceptable security risk ahead of the planned March 25, 2027 launch.
Digital Sun released an official statement confirming the strategy shift across its social channels. The developer explicitly noted that recent news of cloned games heavily influenced this operational pivot.
The studio instead prefers to keep early gameplay testing private rather than expose the core gameplay to AI replication software.
How Does the Discord Playtest Compare to the Original Plan?
The revised Discord playtest restricts access to a contained, invite-only community, whereas the original Steam plan offered a highly visible public release.
The initial public test aimed to collect broad player feedback and engagement metrics directly from the Steam storefront.
The new approach prioritizes intellectual property security by distributing access in heavily controlled waves starting October 29.
The Verdict: Protecting Indie Development
The gaming industry faces unprecedented structural challenges as AI accelerates the speed of unauthorized game replication. Digital Sun represents a growing wave of independent developers prioritizing intellectual property protection over massive early player exposure.
Players wishing to test the tower defense mechanics early must now secure an invite through the official Digital Sun Discord server.
