The Labour of Love Award is not given to the latest games. Instead, it goes to older games, namely those for which updates are still being released. Even though these games are often many years old, the developers continue to look after their games and keep bringing new updates to the game.
Dota 2 is one of the games from Valve, i.e. Steam itself. It is a MOBA and is the successor to the popular Warcraft 3 mod Dota. Dota 2 still receives an update at least once a month, in which some champions and items are adjusted. The Dota 2 e-sports scene is particularly well known, with many international tournaments watched by thousands of fans.
The team behind Dota 2 also organises events from time to time. In winter, for example, the Frostivus event took place, which brought new cosmetics and other features to the game, and such events are a regular occurrence in Dota 2. Apex Legends is the Battle Royal Shooter from EA, which was released in 2019 and has also been available on Steam since 2020. This game also has a large e-sports scene where the best of the best compete in international tournaments to find out which team is the best in the world.
The game receives major updates from time to time, in which new legends are added, weapons are changed, maps are customised or new ones are added. There are also often events, such as crossover events, where they team up with other games and add skins inspired by characters from other games to their game. Red Dead Redemption 2 is set in the Wild West of America in the year 1899. It is a game by Rockstar Games and was released in 2019. In Red Dead Redemption 2, you will commit many robberies to earn your money. But this means you are constantly on the run and have to make decisions. Decisions that can have devastating consequences and influence the game to the end.
As Rockstar Games has put its main focus on the production of Grand Theft Auto 6, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Read Dead Online will no longer receive any updates. Nevertheless, Story Mode and Online Mode are still playable and fun. Nevertheless, this title is not quite right in the Labour of Love category.
Rust is a survival game that recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. It has been on Steam since 2018 and is still played by many players. In Rust, you start from 0, you enter the world with nothing and then have to build up your own base over time and build modern weapons through research, which you can use to fight other players to get their scrap, i.e. their money.
The developers of Rust are constantly releasing new updates to the game. These updates include new weapons, suitable map customisations or new trailers for the game. Players can also often get drops on Twitch by watching Rust streams.
Deep Rock Galactic is a co-op SciFi FPS in which you and up to 4 friends have to exterminate the various hordes of monsters in generated caves in order to get the loot in these caves. Even though Deep Rock Galactic has been on the market since 2020, it brings new content with each new season, so the game never gets boring.
In the last season, new items such as jet boots and arcade machines were added. In the next season, i.e. in the first quarter of 2024, the new Rogue Core mode will enter the Closed Alpha, bringing a breath of fresh air and variety to the game.
