Just Cause 3’s Explosive Open World Now Available on PlayStation Plus

Originally released on December 1, 2015, Just Cause 3 marked the return of Rico Rodriguez, the globe’s most agile mercenary, now available to PlayStation Plus subscribers. Developed by Avalanche Studios New York and published by Square Enix, the game offers a massive sandbox playground where destruction is not just allowed — it’s encouraged.

Welcome Back to Medici — A Paradise for Chaos

This third entry moves even further from narrative focus, emphasizing freeform gameplay across a much denser map. Players join Rico as he returns to his homeland to help liberate the people of Medici from the grip of dictator General Di Ravello.

Medici spans around 1,000 square kilometers (roughly 400 square miles), offering total freedom on land, sea, and air. Rico’s signature toolkit makes a comeback — the iconic grappling hook, infinite parachute, and a major new addition: the wingsuit. This new gadget completely changes traversal, allowing players to soar through the skies and zip across mountains with unmatched agility.

Mastering the grappling hook–parachute–wingsuit combo quickly becomes second nature — and incredibly fun. To enhance the experience, the grappling hook now features an updated physics system, allowing multiple tethers at once for creative mayhem — like slinging explosive barrels into helicopters or yanking statues off their pedestals.

Between Legacy and Stagnation

When first reviewed, Just Cause 3 earned a solid 16/20, praised for its unfiltered, over-the-top fun. The core gameplay loop — causing chaos with wingsuit stunts, massive explosions, and creative physics — remains endlessly entertaining. The main story takes around 25 hours to complete, while fully exploring Medici can easily double that time.

Players also appreciated the improved “Rebel Dropsystem, which allows faster equipment delivery and experimentation with weapons and vehicles. The upgrade mechanics encourage replayability, giving players reasons to tackle challenges in new ways. However, critics pointed out several shortcomings. Despite its fun gameplay, Just Cause 3 felt too similar to its predecessor, lacking the ambition expected from a major sequel.

Visual polish and AI behavior were inconsistent, and combat sometimes leaned too arcade-like. Environmental destruction was limited to select structures, which somewhat dampened the illusion of total chaos. Just Cause 3 remains a vibrant and cathartic playground.

Why You Should Dive In Today

Now part of the PlayStation Plus catalog, Just Cause 3 is the perfect excuse to (re)discover one of the most explosive open worlds ever made. Whether you’re tethering enemy soldiers to fuel tanks or gliding over the turquoise waters of Medici, it’s a sandbox designed for creativity, chaos, and laughter.
