Doom co-creator John Romero has confirmed that there is still interest in his FPS, which was canceled as part of Microsoft and Xbox layoffs earlier this year.

The FPS was reportedly a new IP, midway through development, when Microsoft pulled its publishing deal following a significant round of layoffs across the company and its gaming division.
In a new interview with Game Reactor, Romero says that the canceled game could see a revival and that they are still deciding on the next steps.
The $50m Project That Microsoft Canceled
Romero Games, founded in 2015 by John and Brenda Romero, was working on its new FPS, an all-new IP, when Microsoft canceled it after mass layoffs at the company.
However, John says that the project isn’t quite dead yet, as the studio has “a lot of companies that are interested and still working” on how to revive the shooter.
The Value Proposition: $50 Million of “Free” Assets
Looking at the positive side, Romero said the game was “midway” through development and that anyone who takes it on will “get $50 million for free” from the money put into it before it was canceled.
If it happens to turn into something else entirely, Romero doesn’t mind, as “no matter what, you are shortcutting the end of your game” because they “have a lot there already.”
Romero’s Resolve: Saving the IP and the Studio
Despite rumors of closure following the layoffs, Romero Games quickly moved to clarify that it remained in business and committed to the canceled FPS.
Romero has revealed that the team is actively searching for a new publisher to push the game over the finish line and get it out to the waiting public. However, even if a new partner is not found, the studio still retains the IIP and assets, which could later be used for a future project.
Conclusion
John Romero, the co-creator of Doom and co-founder of id Software, says that his canceled FPS may still see a release, after admitting the project was “midway” through development. If a new publisher is still not found, fans could still see parts ot it as Romero Games still owns the IP and assets. Are you disappointed the game was canceled? Let us know in the comments.
