Fractured Utopias: Frostpunk 2’s First DLC Adds 100+ Events, 8 Utopias, and a Deadly New Plague
In the world of Frostpunk 2, even the most perfect societies have a dark side, and that’s exactly what 11 Bit Studios plans to explore with its DLC Fractured Utopias, releasing on December 8th. It’s fitting to bring a little snow back to the Christmas holidays.
If you’re not familiar with city-builders, chances are this whole presentation just looks like a waking nightmare to you.
“The children yearn for the mine”
The thing is, when facing a volcanic winter ready to wipe out humanity, you sometimes have to make tough decisions to ensure your megalopolis survives. Did you enjoy difficult moral dilemmas? Having the state sponsor alcoholism? You’re going to rub your hands together with glee over this first expansion, focused on the Utopia Builder mode.
From now on, the factions will all aim for their own utopia, and by improving your relations with them, you will unlock new laws, buildings, or systems on a dedicated tree. These are all specific bonuses for each faction, which will reinforce the weight of your decisions on the path forward.
Concretely, you will end up embracing an entire ideology… even if it means imposing a rigid, or even downright dogmatic, vision of society. Engage with the Technocrats to establish an era dictated by technological progress or militarize excessively by following the Legionnaires. The choice is yours.
Over 100 Narrative Events and New Features
In a nutshell, custom games in sandbox mode will gain significantly in depth and interest. This is an undeniable argument for leaders who have already finished the campaign or who want an extra batch of kids to send to the coal mines.
And since we have to summarize all this with some big numbers, here’s what you’ll find:
- 8 distinct utopias linked to each faction, all benefiting from their own development tree leading to a different game ending.
- 12 unique elements (laws/hubs/abilities, etc.) to unlock per faction
- 8 new faction hubs (1 per faction)
- 8 new residential district variants, specific to each faction
- Over 100 new narrative events
- 2 premium narratives: “Nihilists” and “Plague”
- 1 new map
New Challenges: Epidemics and the Doomsayers Faction
Alongside these additions, your city’s prosperity will now be severely tested by two new threats.
First, an epidemic mechanic that you’ll need to contain before it turns your citizens into plague-ridden outcasts. But also a new faction, the Doomsayers, a kind of depressive group whose influence you’ll have to contain, or risk undermining the troops’ morale.
As for the 11 Bit Studios team… you can hardly say they’re resting on their laurels, as they’re still working in parallel on the next big update for The Alters. A very busy end of the year.
