Marathon’s Senior Art Director Leaves Bungie 3 Months Before Release

Marathon has found itself in the headlines again as its Senior Art Director, Joseph Cross, has left Bungie just three months before the game’s launch. While the departure isn’t messy, it remains controversial as gamers have found one more reason to be worried about the game.
Art Director Joseph Cross Confirms To Be No Longer with Bungie
Marathon is back on the news and unfortunately, it’s again not because of game details but what’s happening around it. From player dissatisfaction to art theft accusation, the game is nothing short of controversy.
While earlier concerns have already been addressed including the plagiarism situation, the game seems to not shake off that dark cloud. The latest? Its long-time art director, Joseph Cross, has left the company.
His departure from Bungie, although not a secret, was quiet. It wasn’t until The Game Post reported Cross’ updated LinkedIn profile that people started looking. His last Bungie position, Senior Art Director, ended in 2025. On top of that, his social media profile bio changed to a broader description.
Of course this could just mean that he changed positions but this is also now confirmed by Cross himself.
Joseph Cross, previous Senior Art Director for Bungie’s Marathon, has officially left the company. He said to Kotaku’s Ethan Gach that his departure was his choice and that he is, “super proud of the project and what the team accomplished over the last six years.”
He further made the move public on X, praising the art team at Bungie and will be enjoying the game as a fan when it launches.

Marathon is set to be released for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in March 2026. The exact release date has not been revealed yet.
