Many of us sign into our Epic Games Store account once a week to claim the free game before logging back out.
However, you would be wrong to think that a game would not sell well after a free giveaway.
In fact, not only does a game’s sales increase on the Epic Games Store after being free for a week but sales for the game increases on other platforms, such as on Steam.
To explain this, Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games, said in an interview that: “You’re not going to go out and buy if you’re not into games like Satisfactory, you’re not going to go out and spend money to buy Satisfactory but if you get it for free you realize it’s an awesome game.”
Essentially, when a game is made available for free for a week, more people become aware of it and claim it.
After playing the game on Epic, many of those same people then purchase the game and play it on Steam, console, or other platforms.
The boost in sales goes further than just a single developer or publisher. Games across the whole genre gain additional sales.
To put it simply, if a horror game is made available for free on Epic, people who would not usually play horror games then download and play it and are then more likely to purchase horror games in the future.
The weekly free games on the Epic Games Store tend to be good advertisements for the game, developers, publishers, and the genre as a whole.
HOW MANY PEOPLE DOWNLOAD THE FREE GAMES ON EPIC?
Some would argue that the free game giveaways are beneficial if the number of accounts created and users continues to rise.
In a few years, if things continue, Epic expects the Epic Games Store to be profitable in 2024.
Whether the store can ever truly rival Steam is another question and won’t be answered for a few more years.
