Far Cry 7 and Assassin’s Creed: Ubisoft’s billion-dollar future

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has officially pulled the emergency “reset” lever on the gaming giant, creating a major course correction for the Ubisoft we’ve known for decades. With six projects officially dead and a radical new “Creative House” structure rising from the ashes, the question now is whether the company can survive its own transformation.

For years, Ubisoft operated as a massive, interconnected web of global studios, often criticized for a “copy-paste” design philosophy that many dubbed the “Ubisoft Formula.” Today, that formula has been discarded in favor of a leaner, more aggressive corporate structure.

In a high-stakes pivot aimed at reclaiming market confidence and stabilizing a volatile €4.20 stock price, Yves Guillemot has spoken to Variety about the formation of five specialized Creative Houses.

However, this newfound independence comes at a staggering human and creative cost. To achieve a mandated €200M in savings, Ubisoft has confirmed a final, painful round of layoffs and the total cancellation of six projects, including the long-suffering Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake.

As the company retreats to its “Big Three” pillars, Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six, we explore whether this decentralized future is a masterstroke of efficiency or a desperate consolidation in the face of a changing industry.

The Five Houses: Ubisoft’s Radical Bet on Autonomy?

Ubisoft’s new operating model is a drastic departure from the centralized “editorial team” that once dictated the design of every game from Paris.

Starting in April 2026, the company will be carved into five distinct Creative Houses, each functioning as an independent business unit with full financial accountability and creative control.

By assigning each House its own Profit & Loss (P&L) responsibility, Ubisoft is ending the era in which massive hits like Assassin’s Creed subsidized the losses of experimental or underperforming projects.

The Breakdown of the Five Houses:

  • Creative House 1 (Vantage Studios): The “Billionaire Brand” factory. Headed by the core teams behind Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six, this unit is tasked with turning Ubisoft’s biggest IPs into annual, high-revenue engines.
  • Creative House 2: The Tactical Shooter specialist. Focused on competitive and co-op experiences, this house oversees The Division, Ghost Recon, and the long-awaited return of Splinter Cell.
  • Creative House 3: The Live-Service specialists. Managing “sharp” live experiences like Brawlhalla, For Honor, Riders Republic, and Skull & Bones.
  • Creative House 4: The Fantasy & Narrative hub. Dedicated to immersive worlds including Anno, Rayman, Beyond Good & Evil, and Might & Magic.
  • Creative House 5: The Casual & Mobile arm. Focusing on reclaiming the family market with Just Dance, UNO, and mobile growth.

The Canceled Six: What We Lost in the Shuffle?

The path to this new structure is paved with the remains of canceled projects. To hit a mandated €200 million in fixed cost savings, Yves Guillemot confirmed that six games have been permanently scrapped.

The most high-profile casualty is the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. After years of development hell and multiple studio shifts, Ubisoft has determined that the project no longer aligns with their “enhanced quality benchmarks” or the new profitability requirements of Creative House 4.

Alongside it, four unannounced AAA titles and one major mobile project have been canceled to prevent further “resource bleed.”

The cost-cutting also extends to the workforce. With studio closures in Stockholm and Halifax, and a controversial return to a 5-day in-office mandate, Ubisoft is bracing for a talent exodus.

Guillemot defends the move as necessary for “alignment and speed,” but with 1,200 employees recently striking in protest, the internal culture remains at a breaking point.

The “Billion-Dollar” Pipeline: Assassin’s Creed & Far Cry 2026-2027

Ubisoft is doubling down on its most “reliable” heavy hitters. Under the newly minted Vantage Studios, a division now backed by a massive $1.2 billion investment from Tencent, the goal is to transform Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry into consistent, “billion-dollar brands.”

Forget the gaps between releases, the Creative House strategy is designed to flood the market with diverse Assassin’s Creed experiences:

  • The “Black Flag” Remake (Project Obsidian): Despite a recent internal delay, this remains the most anticipated project in the pipeline. It is now reportedly aiming for an April 2026 reveal, with a launch window set before March 2027.
  • Assassin’s Creed Hexe: This is the “darkest” entry in the franchise to date, set during the 16th-century European witch hunts. It will spearhead the next era of the Infinity platform.
  • Multiplayer & Mobile: Two mobile titles were victims of the 2026 purge, but Project Invictus (the standalone multiplayer hub) is still alive, designed to keep players engaged between mainline releases.

Guillemot also officially confirmed that two major Far Cry projects are currently in active development to break the “stagnant” feeling of the last few entries:

  • Far Cry 7 (Project Blackbird): This mainline sequel is rumored to ditch the standard formula for a high-tension, 72-hour in-game timer (roughly 24 hours of real-time play). Players must rescue their kidnapped family before the clock runs out, creating a persistent, non-linear pressure cooker.
  • Project Maverick: A standalone extraction shooter set in the brutal Alaskan wilderness. Expect permadeath, deep gear systems, and high-stakes survival mechanics.

Conclusion: A Leaner Ubisoft or a Studio in Retreat?

The “Creative House” autonomy sounds great on paper, but the human cost is massive. We are looking at a smaller, more defensive Ubisoft. By focusing purely on “core brands,” they might stabilize the €4.10 stock price. However, they risk losing the experimental spark that once defined them.

For fans of Ubisoft’s major brands, this restructure has to deliver more than just a balanced spreadsheet.
