Bethesda Game Studios may be secretly developing Spyteam, a mysterious new franchise that recently resurfaced through developer profiles and trademark activity. Here’s what we know about this shadow project and its uncertain future.

Bethesda resume work on Spyteam after 2022, despite the focus on TES 6

While Bethesda is already busy with Starfield, the ongoing evolution of Fallout 76, and the long-awaited development of The Elder Scrolls VI, a new lead suggests the studio may have been quietly building an entirely new IP. A discovery on LinkedIn has reignited discussions around Spyteam, a name that has circled the industry for years.

A New Franchise Hinted by Developer Profiles

A LinkedIn profile spotted by well-known industry observer Timur222 reveals that Sung Yi, former Lead Animator at Bethesda Game Studios Dallas, worked not only on Starfield, Fallout 76, and Elder Scrolls: Blades, but also on an unannounced franchise in its early stages.

Yi was part of the Dallas office between 2018 and 2022. His mention of a “new franchise” has stirred curiosity again. Could this be the long-rumored Spyteam?

A renewed interest comes from years of trademark activity. Initially registered in 2018, the Spyteam name resurfaced with renewals in 2022, 2023, and again in early 2025—this time including explicit references to mobile software and downloadable mobile game programs.

Insider Confirms the Dallas Team Worked on Spyteam

Former Bethesda employee Hevy008 had previously confirmed that the Dallas office was working on Spyteam in 2022 before being reassigned to Starfield. According to him, the project originated from Todd Howard himself and existed only as a prototype.

He commented on ResetEra after misinformation circulated around Starfield, clarifying that Spyteam was indeed real and briefly in development—his identity was later verified by journalist Jason Schreier.

Most of this is non sense, BGS Dallas was working spyteam before getting put on Starfield, it was a pet project of Todds and was just being prototyped.”

Is Spyteam Still in Development?

Bethesda currently operates through four studiosAustin, Dallas, Maryland, and Montreal. Officially, the company’s priorities are focused on three major pillars:

  • The second Starfield DLC
  • Continued updates for Fallout 76
  • Full production of The Elder Scrolls VI

Complicating matters further, Microsoft’s gaming division underwent major restructuring earlier this year. Studios must now meet stricter profitability expectations, and strategic shifts have already led to the cancellation of a new MMO at ZeniMax Online to reinforce the Fallout franchise. In this climate, creating a brand-new IP may be considered too risky.

In Conclusion: Could Spyteam Return One Day?

Bethesda is known for long development cycles and secretive incubation phases. Some projects disappear for years before resurfacing. Spyteam could still be alive somewhere within the studio’s walls—or it may have been shelved indefinitely.

Could this mysterious franchise be Bethesda’s next big surprise? What kind of new IP would Bethesda work on, apart from Fallout and The Elder Scrolls? Let us know in the comment section below!
