Bethesda wanted to give us all an early Christmas present, and it’s exactly what we all wanted. Todd Howard has done it again: Skyrim is officially being released once more. Yesterday, the game unexpectedly arrived as a shadow drop for the Nintendo Switch 2. It is an improved portable version compared to the Switch 1 or the Steam Deck.
Release Date and the “Free” Upgrade
The Elder Scrolls Skyrim: Anniversary Edition is available right now for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the Nintendo eShop. If you own the Skyrim Anniversary Edition for the original Switch, you get the Switch 2 Edition for free. But if you didn’t have the game for the Switch yet, you’ll have to dig deep into your pockets, because the game costs $59.99 in the Nintendo eShop. Bethesda calls it their Christmas gift, and there is also a new trailer, which you can see a little further down.
Skyrim Switch 2 Features and Improvements
The Switch 2 version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition naturally comes with several improvements. What immediately stands out is the better graphics; when the Switch 2 is docked, it is said to reach 4K. When using the Switch as a handheld, the game is said to run at 1080p. Additionally, the render distances have increased, allowing you to see more from further away without it becoming blurry.
Thanks to the new SSD architecture in the Switch 2, near-instant load times are also possible. So you no longer have to wait for buildings to load; you are inside almost immediately. Of course, the Joy-Con 2 is also supported. This now enables the new Mouse Mode, making it easier to navigate menus and manage your inventory.
What is included in the Switch 2 Version of Skyrim
When you get Skyrim for the Nintendo Switch 2, you get the Anniversary Edition of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. This means you get the base game along with all 3 DLCs (Dawnguard, Hearthfire, Dragonborn). Additionally, the Anniversary Edition includes all Creation Club content such as fishing, Survival Mode, and several new quests.
Conclusion: Skyrim Lives On on the Switch 2
Even 13 years after its original release, Skyrim shows that it can still be re-released. The Switch 2 version feels like a small gift to all fans who want to experience the adventure on the go in the best possible quality. With 4K in the dock, fluid 1080p in handheld mode, extremely short load times, and the numerous contents of the Anniversary Edition, Bethesda delivers a well-rounded package. While the price is high for newcomers, the free upgrade is a real plus for existing Switch players. Overall, this shadow drop confirms once again: Skyrim remains timeless and keeps finding new platforms on which it can shine.
