White Xbox Series S-Style Console Leaks Without Disc Drive

In the last few days, some photos of a mysterious new Microsoft Console have been circulating. These privately sent photos to Exputer, seem to be indeed a new version of Xbox Series X, with what appears to be a new option to compete against the so-called PS5 Pro, rumors of which are circulating.

The new White Xbox Series X

These photos sent to Exputer, although in very low quality, seem to show a White variant of the Xbox Series X. This variant seems to align perfectly with the late 2023 leaks of the Brooklyn project. We know that the biggest change in this White variant will be the complete absence of a disc drive, just like Series S, but that’s not all. In fact, from the leaks of the Brooklyn project, we know that the new White Series X will also have a new cooling system, because the APU will undergo a die shrink from 7 nm to 6nm, just like the “refresh” of the Steam Deck OLED. This not only will help to be more efficient but potentially, as with the Steam Deck OLED, we might even see an increase of up to 10% in certain games.

We also have confirmation, still from the September leaks, of an update to the WiFi module to 6E and Bluetooth 5.2, and potentially a larger internal space given the absence of the disc drive, thus all games will be digital.

Microsoft’s response to Sony’s PS5 Pro

The design of this new version deviates from the cylindrical shape of the initial leaks, but it’s not certain that this White version uses a prototype case. Although reusing the original shell of the Xbox Series X would seem to align with Microsoft’s strategy. In fact, from Exputer, it seems that this new all-digital version intends to launch with a price cut ranging from $50 to $100. Which would position in undercutting a potential PS5 Pro, which is thought to be over $600.

Combined with the fact that a die shrink, albeit remaining with a Zen 2-based APU on the processor side and RDNA 2 on the GPU side, would be slower than a PS5 Pro by about 30%. Considering rumors of a PS5 Pro on RDNA 3 but with the use of Zen 2 cores, this would put it above 30-40% faster than a normal PS5 (which is slightly slower than an Xbox Series X). Furthermore, we have other rumors that Xbox is working on a portable console and is already working on the next generation of consoles. With the bulk of the news coming during the holiday season according to Xbox President Sarah Bond.
