What’s Next for Dead Space? Nothing, Franchise is “On Ice” at EA
EA insiders say Dead Space is “on ice” with no sequel or remake planned, leaving the 17-year-old horror IP’s future uncertain.
Dead Space seems to be, literally, on dead space right now as internal chatter within EA referred to the franchise as “on ice”. With no current plans of sequels, remake, or reboots, this 17-year-old IP’s only hope for revival is maybe a buy out.
EA Puts the Dead Space IP on hold
Well just as it seems that almost all news coming out of the gaming world is like an early Christmas present, one stands out as not. In a recent Insider Gaming Weekly Podcast, Mike Shaw mentioned that the Dead Space IP is currently on hold.
He shared that according to his source, “all the internal messaging points to the IP being ‘on ice’ and that with the way current leadership [is heading], they don’t expect it to be picked up whatsoever.” Looking back, it does seem true since EA restructured teams and studios to focus on the Battlefield franchise. And with the way BF is going, they won’t be looking to shake things up for now.
Furthermore, co-creator Glen Schofield also once pitched the idea of Dead Space 4 but EA wasn’t having it. At this point, they were already dead set on the large-scale live-service title direction.
Back to Mike Shaw, he also shared that EA employees are privately hoping that the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (new owner of EA) may consider selling the IP. They did buy the company for BIG money so this could be an option to get some back quickly.
However, co-host Tom Henderson is skeptical about this scenario as something this big may not be a financially-wise decision for the potential buyer. On top of the acquisition cost, they’ll have to pull out more serious cash to create and produce a new game.
Since no official announcement was made by EA regarding this matter, Dead Space remains hanging… possibly in the vault.
