War Thunder is a Free to Play game where you can control tanks, planes, helicopters, and even ships. The Line of Contact Update: War Thunder Adds Infantry

War Thunder has officially broken its “vehicles only” rule. Gaijin Entertainment has announced the major Line of Contact update, which arrives with a closed beta allowing players to control infantry troops. This news came as a major surprise just a few days ago, on December 4th, via a new Development Video. This new War Thunder update introduces infantry, finally completing the battlefield trinity of infantry, armor, and air superiority.

Everything We Know About the Infantry Gameplay

Line of Contact will be a dedicated mode within the game, existing alongside the pure vehicle battles. Gaijin already has another title featuring infantry units: Enlisted, which is set in World War II. However, this new mode in War Thunder focuses on modern warfare, matching the Top Tier vehicles in the game. You control a squad of AI troops, similar to Enlisted, but with modern and improved AI. You personally control the Commander in first-person and head directly onto the battlefield. There are various classes similar to Battlefield; confirmed roles include Assault, Sniper, and Anti-Tank/Anti-Air specialists.

In your hangar, there is a new area for your weapons. Here, you can customize your loadout with sights, grips, and grenade launchers. The combat meta is also shifting significantly, as Anti-Air units now possess MANPADS, allowing them to defend against planes and jets from anywhere. Pilots no longer just have to worry about AA vehicles—they can be attacked by anyone.

New Vehicles Joining the Fight

Infantry troops obviously need support. That’s why there is a substantial list of new vehicles designed to assist the ground forces. The new vehicles include:

  • Ajax (UK) Light Tank
  • FR1 Fireball (USA)
  • MIG 25 PD
  • J10C
  • DBLK (USSR) Bomber
  • F18 Superhornet
  • FPV Drones
  • M10 Booker (USA)
  • PR 1331M
  • BMP T
  • USS South Dakota
  • HMS Prince of Wales

How to Join the War Thunder Infantry Beta

To register for the Line of Contact beta, you need to visit the official Gaijin website. After signing up, you’ll have to wait, and with a bit of luck, you’ll receive a confirmation later. The Closed Beta is available for PC as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.

Conclusion: A New Era or a Mistake?

With Line of Contact, War Thunder is taking its biggest step in years. The introduction of infantry not only changes the gameplay but expands the entire battlefield with a completely new dimension. Whether the mix of tanks, planes, and now ground troops will be convincing in the long run depends on how well Gaijin handles the balancing and how cleanly the AI functions. But one thing is already clear: this update could lead War Thunder into a new age and fundamentally change the game feel for millions of players.
