Soulslikes have long ceased to be a niche genre and are exactly what you need if you’re looking for a challenge in gaming. The high difficulty level is no longer a deterrent, but rather a motivation to succeed. These games offer demanding boss fights, and over time you learn every pattern of the bosses if you’ve died to them often enough.

Top 3 Soulslikes

From dark fantasy to puppets, there is an enormous variety in the Soulslike genre. You can freely choose your builds in many of the games, and in combat, it all comes down to your own skill. Many studios are trying their hand at Soulslikes, but the original still comes from FromSoftware. Today, the selection is vast, so here is a short list that might help you make a decision. Here are the Top 3 Soulslikes you can play right now.

#1: Elden Ring: The Open Crown of the Genre

Elden Ring is one of the biggest Soulslike games, featuring the unique addition of an open world. In the game, you can freely explore and choose the order of the bosses. This makes the game feel easier than other Soulslikes, as you can simply go to other bosses to level up and get stronger. You also have extremely high build variety, with different weapon classes and spells. Spirit Ashes add a new tactical layer, allowing you to summon various helper spirits. Besides the open world, there are also dungeons serving as classic Souls sections with various enemies and a boss at the end.

The boss design ranges from epic to brutally difficult. The bosses offer epic effects and powerful attacks. Atmospherically, the game lies between decay, mythology, and grandeur. The lore was developed by George R. R. Martin (writer of Game of Thrones). The game also offers high replay value through different playstyles and endings. With its many bosses, Elden Ring is the perfect entry point for new players, even though there are challenging bosses. In total, there are 167 bosses, and the DLC Shadows of the Erdtree brings even more weapons, bosses, areas, and much more.

#2: Dark Souls Remastered: The Foundation of the Challenge

Dark Souls is the origin of all Souls games. Modern Soulslike design only exists because of this game. Dark Souls originally released in September 2011, but a remaster with better graphics and performance came out in 2018. The world is completely interconnected, and you constantly unlock shortcuts. The bonfire system is the perfect balance of risk and reward, as you have a chance to retrieve your souls for leveling, but if you die without recovering them, everything is gone.

In combat, as in all Soulslikes, you must watch your stamina so you can dodge and strike. Dark Souls 1 features iconic bosses like Ornstein and Smough, and many more. Storytelling is minimalist, giving a feeling of isolation and melancholy. Every victory over a boss feels rewarding. The game’s design is timeless, and with the Remastered version, it still looks acceptable today. This version also includes all DLCs.

#3: Lies of P: Dark Fairytale Meets Precision Combat

Lies of P is the first game on today’s list that is not from FromSoftware. It was developed by NEOWIZ. The game is based on Pinocchio, reinterpreted as a dark Belle Époque horror world. It takes place in the city of Krat with atmospheric, linearly structured Souls level design. Here you get the classic Souls feeling with a modern story. The gameplay focuses more heavily on perfect blocking. The weapon selection is smaller, but you can modularly combine your weapons, separating blades and handles. Furthermore, Pinocchio (the main character) has a mechanical arm that brings tactical expansions.

Lies of P has a much clearer story than Dark Souls. Additionally, there is a morality system revolving around lies and choices. The difficulty level is traditionally high like in Soulslikes, yet fairly designed. The boss fights are strongly constructed, and you quickly see a clear learning curve. For many, Lies of P is the best non-FromSoftware Soulslike of recent years. Also, the DLC Lies of P Overture was released last year, offering even more content.
