The Great Rebellion: Edition 2084 Banned From Nintendo eShop

The Great Rebellion: Edition 2084 was supposed to launch on Nintendo eShop on November 21, 2025. However, a day before the release, Nintendo pulled the game from its US and UK eShop citing, “could be damaging to Nintendo’s reputation or brand.”

Nintendo Pulls The Great Rebellion: Edition 2084 from eShop

The Great Rebellion made its debut on PC last year and has since gained an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam. However, in April last year, just 2 months from launch, Steam banned the game in Germany, simply saying it’s not allowed there. According to a special report by Niche Gamer on the topic, the Steam email did not specify what exactly about it is not suitable for the country. But one can imagine since the game is very “anti-woke” with a satirical take on political figures.

While that definitely is a big blow, it still remained purchasable on Steam in other regions. It did give them the insight that how the game is, probably won’t fly with Nintendo. That’s when The Great Rebellion: Edition 2084 came about. It’s a toned down version of the original game which was submitted and then approved by Nintendo. The listing went live and gamers were able to wishlist it.

Unfortunately, the powers that be didn’t share the same thought. A day before its November 21, 2025 release, the game was delisted from Nintendo eShop in the UK and US. According to Kvlt Games, they received an explanation from Nintendo saying, “Upon reviewing The Great Rebellion: Edition 2084, Nintendo has determined that it contains content that could be damaging to Nintendo’s reputation or brand.”

While we know Nintendo is a lot stricter with video games content, it’s still weird that they’ve already approved it and then pulled it last minute. And to make things even “weirder” (for lack of a better term), the game is still live and purchasable in Nintendo Japan. So if their explanation was to stand, it doesn’t make sense since it’s the same brand. Maybe it would have been clearer if that statement was continued by “… in the region.”

With rising socio-political tension and increasing censorship, this was far from surprising. Whatever the real reason is, it’s a sad reality for Kvlt Games having spent time and more money in developing this version of the game.

Here’s the official description from its Nintendo Page:

“2084. Giant corporations vs people. A great rebellion begins.

Fight through a variety of levels and shoot down robots with over 60 weapons while listening to stunning dynamic soundtracks with beautiful 16-bit style retro pixel art.
