The Chinese Room Studio Announced Split With Sumo Digital
The Chinese Room is officially out of Sumo Digital after a management buyout. The studio now works independently.
The Chinese Room best known for its narrative-led games, most recently with Still Wakes the Deep, has officially regained its independence following a management buyout. Now operating as a standalone studio, it will move forward under the leadership of studio director Ed Daly.
The Chinese Room Goes Independent
Co-founded by Dan Pinchbeck and Jessica Curry, The Chinese Room built its reputation on games like Dear Esther and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. They have both left the studio but, as seen with 2024 Still Wakes the Deep, the talented people who remain with the company were able to deliver an award-winning game.
For a brief recap, the studio was acquired by Sumo Digital in 2018, which itself became part of Tencent’s portfolio in 2022. Now, in 2025, The Chinese Room has ended its ties with Sumo after a management buyout.

The UK-based studio was in a state of uncertainty following reports that it would likely be sold off by Sumo Digital. The latter previously announced that it “would be refocusing its efforts exclusively on development services for partners” instead of working on original franchises.
So with this move, not only were they able to keep their identity but also gave them full control over their creatives and vision again. They are also looking forward to partnering with other studios that follow the same path.
The studio recently released a major expansion for Still Wakes the Deep, Siren’s Rest, and has since then continued with the development of their upcoming title Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 scheduled for release in October. With that already on the calendar it is very exciting to see where Daly takes the studio. With everything happening in the industry, this seems to be one of the wins.
