Subnautica 2 is finally real: Early Access starts May 2026

After a year defined more by courtroom drama than deep-sea discovery, Unknown Worlds has officially revealed that Subnautica 2 will enter Early Access in May 2026.

Subnautica 2 is finally real: Early Access starts May 2026

Following a high-stakes legal battle that saw the reinstatement of Unknown Worlds’ original CEO Ted Gill just days ago, development on Subnautica 2 has shifted into high gear.

As verified by IGN, despite the friction between publisher Krafton and Unknown Worlds, both parties have unanimously confirmed to its teams that the game is now ready to release into Early Access in May.

May 2026: Subnautica 2 Finally Dives into Early Access

The road to this sequel hasn’t been smooth. Following a high-profile legal battle between Krafton and Unknown Worlds, the project faced significant uncertainty.

The clouds cleared after a successful milestone review and the reinstatement of CEO Ted Gill on March 16 as per a judge’s order. This green light confirms the game is stable and ready for public hands. The May 2026 window marks the beginning of the Early Access*phase.

This means players can provide feedback to the development team and influence the final shape of the ocean while avoiding the full premium retail price seen at a 1.0 launch.

Beyond Survival: UE5 Visuals and 4-Player Co-op

The leap to Unreal Engine 5 is more than just a fresh coat of paint. The environments now react with stunning realism, from the way light hits alien coral to the physics of the water itself.

One of the biggest shifts is the new “sculptural” base-building system. You aren’t locked into rigid grids anymore, allowing for organic shapes that feel integrated into the sea floor.

For the first time, you don’t have to face the leviathans alone. While the game remains a terrifying solo experience at its core, the optional 4-player co-op lets you explore the void with friends.

Price Evolution and Launch Versions

Entering the water during Early Access*is usually the smartest move for your wallet. History shows that these titles often see a price hike once they hit the 1.0 milestone in two or three years.

By jumping in this May, you avoid the future official price increase. It also gives you a front-row seat to “open development,” where your feedback helps balance the DNA-modification mechanics.
