The panic was real. When Rare first announced the “Doubloon Reset,” the Sea of Thieves community went into a frenzy.
Was years of grinding about to disappear into the depths? Thankfully, Drew “Sonicbob” Stevens just dropped a massive developer update that clears the air.
It’s not just a wipe; it’s a full economic stimulus package, and yes, your time investment is being respected.
The “Sonicbob” Update: Why The Wipe is Happening
Let’s address the elephant in the room: Why reset everyone to zero? According to Stevens, the gap between players is just too massive.
We have veterans sitting on mountains of Doubloons and new players with empty pockets. If Rare priced new items for the billionaires, nobody else could afford them.
If they priced them for the newbies, the veterans would buy everything in five seconds and get bored. The only solution? The Great Reset.
It’s the only way to make earning Doubloons feel like a rush again, rather than just watching a number go up.
The “Farewell” Collection: What You Can Buy
Rare isn’t just deleting your cash; they are letting you go out in style. Starting March 19th (Season 19: Act 1), Larinna will open a special shop.
If you’ve been hoarding coins since 2018, this is your moment to flex. You can spend your stash on five exclusive commemorative items:
- Exclusive Title
- Eye Patch
- Belt
- Sword
- Sails
Prices haven’t been revealed, but expect them to be sky-high. These are “recognition purchases”—status symbols to prove you were rich before the market crashed.
The “No FOMO” Safety Net
Here is the coolest part of the update: You don’t even have to log in to save your loot.
Rare knows life happens. If you can’t get online before the big wipe on April 16th, the game will automatically spend your Doubloons for you.
The system will buy the commemorative items on your behalf, starting with the most expensive one (likely the Sails or Sword) and working down the list until your wallet is empty.
Any Doubloons left over after that shopping spree? They get auto-converted into Gold. You literally cannot lose value here.

Mark Your Calendars: The Timeline
This is a two-part event, so don’t get mixed up.
March 19 (Season 19: Act 1): The Commemorative Shop opens. Start buying your gear.
April 16 (Season 19: Act 2): THE RESET.
- If you didn’t buy the items, the game buys them for you.
- Remaining Doubloons turn into Gold.
- Existing Doubloon items (current shop stock) switch to Gold prices.
- The Commemorative items are gone forever.
Future of the Bilge Rats
After the smoke clears, Doubloons will still exist, but they’ll be rarer. You won’t be drowning in them anymore.
To keep things flowing, Rare is introducing the “Bilge Rat Weekender,” a new monthly live event designed to let you earn (and steal) currency for the new Black Market.
Verdict: A Fair Reset?
Honestly, this is one of the most player-friendly “wipes” we’ve ever seen in an MMO. By adding the auto-buy feature, Rare has removed the fear of missing out.
You get the prestige items if you earned them, and you get a fat stack of Gold if you didn’t.
Now, you have a choice: Do you start spending now, or wait for the auto-buy to do the work for you?
