The second game from indie studio Cassel Games, Ratopia, has finally left Early Access. Version 1.0 brings a host of new features to the rat empire. The game entered Early Access on November 5, 2023. Find out everything about the finished game here.

What is Ratopia? – An Overview of the Rat Kingdom

Ratopia is a 2D city-building and survival game. It was developed by South Korean indie studio Cassel Games. You take on the role of a rat queen and rule over your own rat kingdom. After the fall of the old empire, it’s your job to rebuild everything from scratch. The world is both charming and challenging. You’ll explore a 2D pixel world with hand-drawn aesthetics and deep game mechanics.

The game combines classic city-builder mechanics like resource gathering, building management, and production chains with a complex shift system, diplomatic decisions, moral dilemmas, and random events. There are over 150 different buildings to construct, though you’ll need to research many items and structures first. Your residents have individual needs, personalities, and professions, creating social tensions and political challenges — including strikes and riots.

Mechanically, the game falls somewhere between Terraria, Oxygen Not Included, and RimWorld. In this world, nothing is free for your residents. They even have to pay for food, and they expect to be paid for their work. The more they can earn, the more willing they are to work, so you’ll need to carefully decide how to manage your population.

New Features in Version 1.0 – What Players Can Expect

With the official release, a number of new features have been added. Entirely new systems were introduced, like a power system and a religion system. As a leader, you can now improve yourself using the leader perk system. Starting options were reworked too — you can now customize the biome and difficulty. Naturally, there are also new biomes with new enemies. New natural disasters like a locust plague have been added. Steam integration has been improved too, including mod support via Workshop, as well as achievements, trading cards, and Steam Deck support. Here’s the full list of updates from Steam:
