Today we’re talking about the upcoming Ratatan, a music roguelike with rhythm mechanics combined with side-scrolling action.

The game offers rhythm gameplay, but music is even more fun together, which is why it also features an online co-op for up to 4 players. Ratatan Release & Platforms

Ratatan launches on September 18, 2025, initially in Early Access exclusively on PC via Steam. The game was originally set to release earlier but was delayed. Early Access will last about six to twelve months, during which you can expect even more free content. Console versions for PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch are planned for spring 2026. Early Access will, as usual, be cheaper than the full release, making it worthwhile to jump in early. The developers want to polish the game and improve balancing with help from the community.

Ratatan is led by Hiroyuki Kotani, the creator of the Patapon series. Many mechanics from Patapon have been refined and brought over, such as rhythm commands, tactical armies, and the charming art style. But the developers don’t just want nostalgia — they’re also bringing new concepts. New additions include roguelike elements, procedural levels, and modern online features. The project was community-funded, raising over 1.5 million USD via Kickstarter.

Ratatan Gameplay Mechanics Overview

The game features many unique gameplay mechanics. Instead of normal buttons, you give your army (Cobuns) rhythm-based commands like Attack, Defend, and Specials.

Ratatan features a classic roguelike progression. Each run rewards you with new upgrades, items, and rewards. When you die you lose the items you found during the run, but there are also permanent unlocks to push the game forward overall.

The game plans to include over 100 playable units, both Ratatans and Cobuns, with special abilities and different weapon types. Weapons come in different tiers, increasing damage output. There are multiple worlds with unique biomes, enemies, and bosses. There’s also a Fever Mode where timing becomes even more precise, your commands are amplified, and more enemies appear.

Visuals & Music / Atmosphere

Ratatan features hand-drawn 2D animations in colorful, stylized worlds. Each stage has its own palette and mood. In a rhythm game, music is naturally the heart. The soundtrack dynamically adapts to gameplay and becomes even more epic during boss fights. While fans compare it to Patapon, Ratatan aims to offer more variation with modern sounds and co-op music moments.

Multiplayer & Interaction

You can play Ratatan online in co-op with up to four players. In co-op, you’ll need to coordinate and defeat bosses together. Timing and communication are essential since all players’ rhythm commands are synchronized. The Early Access phase will add new modes, and leaderboards, challenges, and community events are also planned.
