Today we are looking at Slay the Spire, a game that mixes roguelike mechanics, deckbuilding, and strategy. The first game was released in 2019 by the indie studio Mega Crit. The core idea is that the player climbs a tower filled with monsters, events, and bosses. Each run is unique thanks to random cards, relics, and map decisions. The gameplay combines card strategy with roguelike progression, which was still quite new at the time.

Slay the Spire quickly became one of the most successful indie strategy games with a large community, mainly thanks to its extremely high replayability. The game inspired many modern deckbuilders such as Monster Train and Wildfrost. On Steam, it remains one of the most popular roguelikes. Because of this major success, a sequel was developed and released just a few days ago.
The rise of a new genre – How Slay the Spire revolutionized deckbuilders
Slay the Spire fundamentally changed the deckbuilder genre. Unlike classic card games such as Hearthstone or Magic, you do not collect cards permanently but instead build a new deck during each run. The focus is on single player strategy rather than multiplayer competition. On the map you can choose between different paths that lead to various events and elite fights, which adds tactical decision making. This means you decide which route to take to climb higher in the tower. The tower is the outer structure of the game and your goal is to reach the top.
You might ask yourself why you would fight an elite enemy if you could simply visit a shop instead. Elite enemies drop better loot and more gold, which makes you stronger, so it is a classic high risk high reward decision, especially because you never know which enemy is waiting where. During a run you continue building your deck by buying new cards in shops or upgrading them. Every decision during a run affects the outcome until the very end.
You can remove cards from your deck, upgrade them, or create new synergies with other cards. Some enemies even add junk cards to your deck, which makes fights more difficult. Slay the Spire offers a perfect balance between attack, defense, and resource management. Because it was so different from games like Hearthstone, this title essentially created the roguelike deckbuilder genre.
Characters, cards, and relics – The strategic depth of Slay the Spire
To play cards in Slay the Spire you always need a form of energy, just like in other classic card games. Each card costs a different amount of energy to use. You can also see in advance what the enemy will do next, so you can prepare with defensive cards to block incoming damage. Slay the Spire features multiple characters with unique mechanics, which we will briefly go through. Ironclad offers self healing and strong attacks from the start. Silent is especially suited for poison builds and many cheap cards. Defect uses an orb system instead of mana with more complex combos. Watcher was added later and introduces stance mechanics.
Each of these characters has their own set of cards with both character exclusive and common cards, creating different strategies. During each run you also find relics that provide permanent bonuses for that run. Some relics strengthen your first attack while others can upgrade items. Many relics and items synergize well with specific cards, allowing you to defeat even strong enemies. Since every run has different drops, you need different strategies each time. With some builds it is even possible to deal infinite damage and completely break the game.
Why Slay the Spire is still one of the most popular roguelikes today
Slay the Spire offers a great balance between strategy and randomness, which makes every run feel different. Runs are perfect for shorter play sessions because they usually last around 30 to 60 minutes, although you can also pause and save at any time. This creates the classic “just one more run” feeling that keeps players coming back.
Despite its relatively simple mechanics, the game has a high learning curve and a lot of room for skill improvement once you understand which cards are strong and what you should buy. Over time you learn to make better decisions. Community guides, tier lists, and strategies also help a lot. On top of that there is a large modding community through the Steam Workshop, which allows players to expand the game with new cards, characters, and additional content.
Slay the Spire 2 – The next step for the roguelike deckbuilder
Slay the Spire 2 is the official sequel to the first game by Mega Crit. The game was released on March 5, 2026 on Steam for PC, macOS, and Linux. It builds on the familiar gameplay of the first game but expands it with many additional systems and mechanics. The goal of the developers was never to reinvent the concept but to expand the strategy and depth. Just like in the first game, the objective is to climb a tower filled with enemies, bosses, and various events along the way.
During your run you once again collect new cards for your deck, relics, and resources to make your deck stronger. You still have multiple rooms to choose from on the map, keeping the tactical depth of the original. The game launched in Early Access and more playable characters are planned over time. Some classes such as Ironclad and Silent return from the first game. However there are also completely new classes like the Necrobinder, a lich character who fights alongside a summoned hand, creating a new combat dynamic. Currently there are four playable characters with unique cards and playstyles.
The card system was also expanded after extensive testing. The developers experimented with more than one hundred card ideas before narrowing them down. One of the biggest new features is four player co op. Players can now climb the tower together with friends, support each other, and share relics. In co op you can combine card synergies and make decisions together on the map.
Technically the game has also been modernized. Instead of using the Unity engine, Slay the Spire 2 now runs on the open source engine Godot, which gives the developers more flexibility for long term development. The game is expected to remain in Early Access for about one to two years before its full release. During this time the developers plan to actively collect community feedback. New cards, enemies, events, and balance changes will be added regularly.
Shortly after release Slay the Spire 2 already reached huge player numbers. At its Early Access launch on Steam the game reached around 400,000 concurrent players, showing how high the expectations for the sequel are. Because of this strong start, Slay the Spire 2 has the potential to become one of the most important indie roguelike games of the next years and further shape the deckbuilder genre.
Conclusion – An indie hit that shaped the roguelike deckbuilder genre
Slay the Spire clearly showed how powerful innovative ideas from the indie scene can be. The combination of roguelike structure, deckbuilding, and strategic decision making created a completely new gameplay experience with high replayability and tactical depth. Every run feels different because cards, relics, and paths inside the tower constantly create new strategies.
With Slay the Spire 2, Mega Crit continues building on this success and expands the concept with new classes, cards, and even a co op mode. If the game evolves through Early Access as successfully as the first title did, the sequel could once again become one of the most important roguelike strategy games of the coming years.
