Key Takeaways: The Quick Answer
Former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan has revealed a new open-world survival FPS set in a mythical, gold-rush era California.
The map features handcrafted landmarks mixed with procedurally generated server seeds to keep exploration and difficulty scaling fresh.
A public alpha playtest on Steam is targeting March, dropping massive marketing budgets for a quiet, community-led Early Access launch.
Jeff Kaplan’s Next Chapter: A Wild West Survival FPS
Jeff Kaplan spent years as the public face of Blizzard’s biggest shooters. Now, after a five-year silence, he’s back with something entirely different.
His new studio, Kintsugiyama, partnered with Dreamhaven to announce The Legend of California. The reveal dropped quietly during a five-hour Lex Fridman podcast—a massive shift from the highly staged presentations we are used to seeing.
This new project is a multiplayer action-survival FPS. You are thrown into a mythical, uninhabited version of California during the gold rush era to hunt, craft, and survive.
Here's a first look at what we've been working on.

The Legend of California is an open-world, action-survival FPS set on the Island of California during the gold rush era. Explore an untamed frontier & forge your legacy alone or with friends.

Welcome to The Legend of California
Historical accuracy is out the window here. Kintsugiyama built the game to capture the raw spirit of the frontier—prospectors, cowboys, and absolute chaos.
The core map features a handcrafted world where you will easily recognize landmarks like Yosemite. But the studio added a twist: a procedural seed system reshuffles points of interest and difficulty zones on every server.
That means the Mojave Desert might be a brutal endgame gauntlet on one server, but a breezy starting zone on another. It is a smart mechanic to keep exploration unpredictable.
Procedural Servers Without the Rust Toxicity
The immediate comparison everyone makes is Rust, and Kaplan addressed it directly. Yes, the game features resetting worlds, but it is not built entirely around ruthless PvP encounters.
You can play solo or form a company with up to three friends on persistent servers. The game lets you establish a ranch, build stables, and set up your own crafting stations.
Combat rewards precision. You will defend your territory from hostile NPCs, hunt wildlife for food, and occasionally face off against other players if you opt into the PvP mechanics.
How to Join the March Alpha Playtest
Early access is approaching fast. Kintsugiyama skipped the massive marketing campaigns to put the game straight onto Steam.
According to the recent podcast interview, the team is targeting a public alpha test this March. You can head over to the official Steam page right now to sign up for the playtests and wishlist the game.
Historically, closed alpha builds are rough around the edges, and Kaplan confirmed this will be an unpolished experience. It is a chance to help shape the game directly with the developers before the official launch later this year.
