Unknown Worlds former studio heads have filed a lawsuit against Krafton. Both sides issue public statements on Subnautica 2’ delay fallout.
Indeed, not all is well in the world of Subnautica. Yesterday we reported about Subnautica 2’s delay to next year. Considering the untimely departure of Unknown Worlds studio heads including its founders a week ago, it was just a matter of time before insiders got a hold of what exactly happened. Turns out, we do not need insiders and we do not need to wait that long. Both Krafton and former studio executives have taken each other online and in court today.
Former Unknown Worlds Studio Heads Files A Lawsuit Against Krafton
A quick recap. Krafton bought Unknown Worlds in 2021 for $500M with a $250M dev bonus payout for reaching revenue targets in 2025. Last week, studio founders Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire plus former CEO Ted Gill, left Unknown Worlds. Charlie posted a heartfelt message on Reddit about his time and motivations in Unknown Worlds and that Subnautica 2 was ready for an early access launch this year. Then yesterday, Krafton announced Subnautica 2 Early Access launch will no longer push through this year and is now scheduled for 2026.
Just with the past week’s events, everyone can see that there was a major fallout. And one of the biggest speculation was that the publisher was avoiding the dev payout. The chatter got so big that the publisher eventually posted an official statement on their website regarding the issue.
Basically, Krafton alleges that “former leadership abandoned the responsibilities entrusted to them.” They further stated that they have made multiple requests for Charlie and Max to resume their roles with the development of the game but to no avail. Even stating that Charlie, instead of devoting himself to Subnautica 2, focused on a “personal film project.” And so these resulted in significant delays with the game which was apparently originally slated for an early access release in 2024. It ended with some heavy words of disappointment, betrayal, and failure to honor.
After this was made public, Unknown Worlds co-founder Charlie Cleveland responded with a public statement in the Subnautica subreddit. In it, he confirmed that a lawsuit was filed against Krafton. He further states that the game was his life’s work so he wouldn’t have intentionally abandoned it. Though he did not spill the specific details of the lawsuit, he did address that the allegation of keeping the dev payout for themselves were untrue. He even said that they have shared the profits with the team, including when the studio was bought.
The lawsuit will surface soon so more details on what is actually filed will be revealed. As of writing, Krafton has not issued a counter lawsuit. Yet.
