- Jeff Kaplan left Blizzard Entertainment to found Kintsugiyama, a 33-person independent studio focused on developer freedom.
- Former industry colleagues frequently ignore Kaplan’s messages now that he lacks the backing of a multibillion-dollar publisher.
- Kintsugiyama delayed the early access launch of its debut game, The Legend of California, to 2027 to improve mechanics and server concurrency.
Why Are Industry Peers Ignoring Jeff Kaplan?
Industry peers are ignoring Jeff Kaplan because he no longer holds executive power at a massive corporate entity like Blizzard Entertainment. Without the multibillion-dollar backing of franchises like Overwatch and World of Warcraft, former colleagues view his independent status as less financially advantageous for their own networking purposes.
Kaplan described this shift in communication during an interview with GameSpot. The developer noted the irony of the situation, stating that he generated over a billion dollars in revenue for various contacts who now refuse to return his messages.
Kaplan views this ghosting positively as a filter for genuine relationships. The Kintsugiyama founder prefers the current environment, noting that the indie space quickly removes individuals who previously engaged in aggressive corporate networking.

The Legend of California Marks a New Era for Kintsugiyama
Kintsugiyama operates on a strict developer-first philosophy. Kaplan and co-founder Tim Ford established the fully-remote studio to ensure creative personnel maintain total control over business decisions, release dates, and game mechanics.
The studio features 32 developers and exactly one operations manager. This lean structure prevents corporate interference from dictating game design. The team recently pushed the release timeline for their open-world survival game, The Legend of California, from this year into 2027.
The delay directly allowed the development team to increase server concurrency from 30 players to 100 players per server during Alpha 4 testing. The creators chose a grounded, Western aesthetic inspired by Kaplan’s Californian upbringing, shifting definitively away from the high-fantasy worlds of previous AAA projects.

How Does Independent Development Compare to Blizzard?
Independent development requires creators to manage all operational logistics directly, contrasting sharply with Blizzard’s highly structured corporate environment. The Kintsugiyama team must handle everything from establishing project timelines to physically building company server networks out of residential dining rooms.
Kaplan experienced a clinical separation from Overwatch upon his departure in 2021. The director actively avoids algorithms, YouTube videos, and subreddits related to the hero shooter to maintain a healthy emotional distance from his former work.
The new studio environment forces the team to rely purely on the quality of their game rather than a prestigious brand name. Kaplan embraces this pressure, arguing that developers produce superior mechanics when they have something to prove and face actual financial risk.
