Pixel Sundays: AION – The Return of an MMORPG Classic

MMORPGs were extremely popular, particularly in the 2000s. Alongside World of Warcraft, numerous titles attempted to build their own dedicated communities. One of these many games was AION. This title stood out primarily due to its angelic wings, the fantasy world of Atreia, and its massive faction battles. The original game launched in 2008 in South Korea, followed by releases in Europe and North America in 2009.

Summary

Over the years, AION evolved through numerous expansions and new content updates. Eventually, its business model underwent significant changes as well. Now, the franchise returns with AION 2, presenting a technically and completely modernized MMORPG. This successor has been available as a free-to-play title on PC since October 5th. In this article, we will examine what made AION so special and determine how much of its original identity has been preserved in this sequel.

AION – A World Between Heaven and the Abyss

AION was developed by the South Korean company NCsoft. The original game debuted on November 25, 2008, in South Korea, and subsequently reached Western markets in September 2009. The title was designed as a fantasy MMORPG featuring PvE, PvP, in-depth character creation, and a persistent online world.

AION

Positioned as a direct competitor to established MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, the game had to assert its market presence. Its fantasy aesthetic, intricate character customization, and emphasis on large-scale player groups were notably distinctive.

The narrative is set within the fantasy world of Atreia. The main storyline centers on the destruction of the Tower of Eternity. This cataclysmic event fractures the world into two distinct regions. On one side are the Elyos, who inhabit the light-drenched region of Elysea. On the opposite side reside the Asmodians, occupying the gloomy realm of Asmodae. Additionally, the Balaur exist as a powerful, draconic faction that serves as a central catalyst for the overarching conflict.

Players must initially select which faction they wish to represent: either the Elyos, featuring a bright, angelic aesthetic and an inviting homeland, or the Asmodians, characterized by a darker visual tone, a different cultural alignment, and a more rugged appearance.

Similar to the Horde and Alliance dynamic in World of Warcraft, AION does not strictly categorize one faction as good and the other as evil; rather, both sides hold their own justified perspectives. Faction allegiance heavily influences the narrative, the game world, and, most importantly, the PvP experience.

AION

The Abyss serves as a primary conflict zone between the two factions. This region offers a PvPvE environment, blending combat against players from the opposing faction with battles against computer-controlled adversaries.

Fortress sieges and group activities were among the game’s defining elements. The ability to fly using personal wings was one of the title’s most significant unique selling points. This exact sensation of flight became a hallmark of the series, one that AION 2 seeks to revive.

AION Through the Years

The original AION relied on classic MMORPG mechanics. Players engaged in quests, leveled up, explored dungeons, and continuously upgraded their equipment. Collaboration with other players in groups and Legions (AION’s equivalent of guilds) was critical. The ongoing conflict between the Elyos and Asmodians motivated many players to commit to their chosen faction long-term.

Beyond standard combat, flying added an extra dimension to both exploration and PvP. Players could actively engage in combat against others while in mid-air. The world design, its accompanying musical score, and the character customization options all helped AION forge a distinct identity.

The game was expanded over many years through numerous updates. These introduced new regions, dungeons, classes, and an ongoing storyline that significantly altered the original player experience. AION initially launched in the West as a premium MMORPG with a subscription model, but transitioned to a Free-to-Play format in Europe in 2012.

AION

This shift attracted a new wave of players, though it also brought monetization practices to the forefront of community discussions. An AION Classic version was eventually released as well, attempting to make the early gameplay experience accessible once again.

Despite numerous expansions, the original game’s technical foundation remained relatively outdated. The MMORPG genre evolved toward larger worlds, modern graphics, and dynamic systems—advancements that the original AION could no longer support.

With AION 2, NC has created an opportunity to transition the franchise’s familiar elements into a modern technical framework. Rather than serving as a simple remaster, AION 2 aims to comprehensively modernize the game concept to attract a large influx of new players.

AION 2 – A New Generation of Atreia

AION 2 is developed and published by NC. The initial release took place on November 19, 2025, in South Korea and Taiwan. The international release followed nearly a year later, launching on October 5th for PC via Steam and NC’s proprietary PURPLE launcher. Those who purchased a Founder’s Pack were granted early access starting September 30th. The game operates on a Free-to-Play model, featuring optional microtransactions. A subscription tier is also available, which unlocks specific features such as the auction house.

AION

The storyline of AION 2 unfolds approximately 200 years after the events of the original game. The setting returns to the fantasy world of Atreia, which still suffers from the aftermath of the great war. The Tower of Eternity has definitively fallen, plunging the world into chaos. The formidable Balaur have invaded vast territories, threatening the remaining inhabitants.

The surviving populations must combat the Balaur while simultaneously dealing with the consequences of their centuries-old enmity. Instead of offering a complete reboot, AION 2 continues the historical conflict established in the original title.

The two playable factions, Elyos and Asmodians, return in this installment, still residing in their respective light and dark regions. During character creation, players must immediately commit to one of the two sides. Both factions feature dedicated starting zones and unique narrative perspectives.

The developers are utilizing separated faction servers to maintain a better balance between the two sides. As the game progresses, the conflict escalates into massive Realm-vs-Realm battles. For these engagements, the Abyss makes its return, serving as the battleground where the factions clash. Concurrently, the Balaur remain a persistent, shared threat.

AION 2 is built on Unreal Engine 5, enabling highly detailed landscapes, sophisticated character models, and advanced lighting effects. According to the developers, the game world is approximately 36 times larger than that of the original AION. The environment consists of expansive fantasy landscapes featuring diverse regions and biomes.

AION

Players can genuinely explore everything they see within the game. Flight is no longer restricted to specific zones; players can now fly across all regions to facilitate exploration. Additionally, underwater exploration has been introduced as a completely new system.

The character creator has also been vastly expanded. It offers over 200 customizable traits, providing extensive options for personalizing both facial and bodily features. This is complemented by various outfits, armor designs, and wing variations. Players can customize their characters far more deeply than was possible in the original game.

Eight Classes and a Modern Combat System

At launch, AION 2 adopts 8 familiar classes from the original title. The distinct roles ensure variety across melee, ranged, magic, and support playstyles. The available classes are as follows:

Class Playstyle
Gladiator Offensive melee fighter featuring area-of-effect attacks
Templar Defensive tank equipped with a shield
Assassin Agile melee fighter executing precise strikes
Ranger Ranged combatant utilizing a bow
Sorcerer Magic-based damage dealer
Spiritmaster Summoner accompanied by spirit companions
Cleric Healer possessing supplementary offensive abilities
Chanter Support class providing buffs and healing

The combat system has also undergone significant changes, aligning more closely with action-oriented MMORPGs. Abilities must be deployed actively and with precise timing. Positioning and enemy behavior now play a much more critical role in encounters. Furthermore, there is no automated combat.

Each class offers a distinctly different combat style and flow during engagements, opening up broader tactical possibilities. The Stigma system allows for additional skills and further customization. This ensures that characters within the same class can be played in vastly different ways.

Quests and world exploration form a fundamental core of the gameplay experience. Various dungeons provide challenges for both solo players and groups. These are accompanied by formidable bosses utilizing unique combat mechanics, many of which require coordinated group efforts to defeat.

AION

The famous Fire Temple from AION also returns to the game in a reworked format. Groups must combine their abilities and coordinate flawlessly to stand a chance against the difficult adversaries found within. Alongside demanding boss encounters, the developers have introduced smaller leisure activities and minigames.

The conflict between the Elyos and Asmodians remains a central pillar of the game. Players can engage each other on battlefields and through dimensional rifts. Aerial combat and vertical movement introduce additional tactical layers to engagements. To achieve success in PvP, players must effectively coordinate different classes. Notably, PvE and PvP utilize separate damage parameters, designed to facilitate a much more precise balancing approach.

Free-to-Play and Release Criticism

AION 2 is fundamentally free to play. The download is available via Steam or NC’s own PURPLE launcher. Even prior to the release, players could access the game five days early by purchasing one of the Founder’s Packs. Alongside early access, these packs offered various cosmetic items and a 30-day membership.

This membership can be purchased as a monthly subscription and unlocks the following:

Advantage Description
Marketplace Access Trade items and materials via the marketplace
Quna Exchange Exchange Kinah for the premium currency Quna
Remote Storage Access your personal storage from anywhere
Exclusive Merchants Access to additional merchants and offers
More Odyle Energy Increased maximum energy capacity
More Dungeon Rewards Receive loot from specific dungeon chests twice instead of once through additional energy consumption

The business model of AION was already a point of contention in the first installment. AION 2 also faced criticism upon release regarding its microtransactions. Not only can cosmetic content be purchased, but as shown above, the subscription provides in-game advantages. Without the subscription, players are at a significant disadvantage, resulting in an unbalanced progression system.

For its international release, AION 2 reached nearly 400,000 players. Even after a week, there are consistently hundreds of thousands of concurrent players. These high player counts demonstrate a strong interest in the franchise’s return. On October 8, the massive player influx even caused server outages in Europe. However, the company opened additional European servers and announced compensation for those affected.

AION

The graphics, the fantasy world, and the character editor received particularly positive highlights. Criticism was primarily directed at the microtransactions. Consequently, user reviews on Steam stand at only about 60% positive. (As of Oct 10)

Can AION 2 Match the Success of the Original?

As a renowned MMORPG brand, AION 2 returns after many years with modern graphics and a significantly larger game world. The flight system offers high recognition value. The eight distinct classes provide a wide variety of playstyles. The expansive map, featuring both PvE and PvP content, appeals to different player groups, and the free-to-play model attracts many newcomers.

However, the MMORPG market remains highly competitive, with established titles like WoW, Guild Wars 2, and Final Fantasy XIV. MMORPGs require regular updates and new challenges to keep players engaged long-term. Endgame features and a fair progression system are crucial in this regard. The business model will ultimately determine whether AION 2 receives a largely positive reception in the long run.

AION

Thanks to a massive and strong launch, AION 2 has reached a large pool of potential long-term players. The Korean version has been active since November 2025 and has received several content updates, such as new dungeons, class adjustments, and Abyss expansions. It is possible that the two versions will not always be entirely synchronized in their development. However, numerous content updates are also planned for the international release.

Conclusion – A Second Chance for AION

With AION 2, NCsoft attempts to restore a well-known MMORPG franchise to its former glory. The modern graphics, the vastly expanded game world, and the revamped combat system bring the classic AION experience into the present. At the same time, many of the original defining features remain intact, including the two factions, Elyos and Asmodians, the Abyss, and the flight system. The return to Atreia should prove particularly interesting for fans of the first game.

The international release, however, also highlights the sequel’s issues. Despite high player counts and significant interest at launch, the microtransactions and paid membership have drawn substantial criticism. The fact that essential features and additional benefits are locked behind a subscription could deter many free-to-play users in the long term. Server issues at launch also cast a shadow over an otherwise successful rollout.

Whether AION 2 can match the original’s success in the long run remains to be seen. The foundation for a successful MMORPG is present, given the large world, eight classes, and numerous PvE and PvP activities. The deciding factor, however, will be how NCsoft responds to the criticism and continues to develop the game in the coming months. AION has been given a second chance with its sequel; it remains to be seen whether they will capitalize on it.
