Last Chance: Top Up Your Fortnite V-Bucks Before Prices Rise
In case you missed it, Epic Games has announced that the price of V-Bucks will change, explaining to fans that “the cost of running Fortnite has gone up a lot” as it seeks additional revenue to help “pay the bills.”
For years, the $8.99 for 1,000 V-Bucks exchange rate felt like a foundational law of the gaming world. However, starting March 19, 2026, that foundation is shifting.
Epic Games is implementing a global price adjustment that retains the price of individual packs while significantly reducing the amount of V-Bucks contained within them.
While the headline news focuses on “paying the bills” for server costs and development, the practical reality for the average player is a roughly 20% decrease in value at the entry-level tier.

Is the New Fortnite Economy Sustainable for Players?
Epic Games has lowered the cost of the standard Battle Pass from 1,000 to 800 V-Bucks, a move that initially looks like a win for the community.
However, the fine print reveals the total V-Bucks rewards earnable through the pass have also been slashed from 1,500, through bonus rewards, down to exactly 800.
This “net-zero” change effectively kills the “Infinite Battle Pass” meta. Previously, a dedicated player could buy one pass and earn enough bonus currency to purchase several Item Shop skins over a year.
Under the new rules, you earn just enough to fund next season’s pass, and nothing more. By removing the 500 V-Bucks previously tucked away in Bonus Rewards, Epic is ensuring that any desire for a new skin or emote will require a fresh trip to the checkout counter.
Comparing the Premium Retail Price to Historical Value
When you look at the raw numbers, the inflation is stark. While the $8.99 price hasn’t moved, the purchasing power of that ten-dollar bill has withered.
In the old system, $8.99 bought you a 1,000 V-Buck pack. Starting March 19, that same $8.99 nets you only 800 V-Bucks.
The most aggressive hike is found in the “Exact Amount” purchases, where 50 V-Bucks has jumped from $0.50 to $0.99, nearly a 100% increase for those just trying to top off a specific purchase.
Epic’s justification that they need to “help pay the bills” feels particularly heavy when contrasted with the company’s reported $6.2 billion in revenue last year.
While the Epic Rewards program offers 20% back in credit, this credit is locked into the Epic ecosystem, essentially forcing “loyalty” to recoup the value lost in the initial transaction.
