Drop Duchy is a new game that combines many familiar features. It merges the classic and well-known Tetris mechanics with turn-based strategy and roguelite structures. The game was developed by the indie studio Sleepy Mill and is published by The Arcade Crew.

The game features a charming pixel art style and impresses with its great game depth. The main element of the game is building your own kingdom. The falling Tetris blocks represent different types of terrain, and you need to place them strategically. It’s also important to fill lines for a bonus. This lets you gain resources, conquer areas, or strengthen your units.

The core of the game is building your own city. For that, you use the well-known Tetris mechanics, meaning blocks fall from above. The goal isn’t mainly to clear lines like in traditional Tetris, but to tactically expand your city. Build larger fields or whatever you currently need to overcome the present challenges.

Additionally, there’s a mix of deckbuilding, puzzle, and roguelite elements. This combination brings a fresh twist to the roguelite genre. The game allows any strategist to dive in, especially if you enjoy stacking blocks. Optimization is key to gather valuable resources, protect your castle, and build your army.

But it’s still a roguelite, so if you lose, the game continues. You’ll naturally improve with the experience you gain, and you can also unlock additional content.

You also have to fight in the game, meaning you must gather your troops and expand your army. The player with the stronger army wins. You can reclaim territories controlled by your opponent to earn more resources. But your own castle will be attacked too, and if it gets too damaged, you lose the game. The goal in each run is to destroy the enemy’s castle, but if you fail, no worries — you can jump right back in and try again.

During your run, you can trade with markets or guilds to gain valuable resources. Use them wisely to upgrade your deck, as these strategic choices will lead you to victory and the next round.

Replay value through procedural maps and strategic variety

Each match starts with a randomly generated world with its own unique challenges. You choose different paths through forests, lakes, or enemy territories. Since everything is procedurally generated, no run is the same. The roguelite elements such as permadeath, permanent upgrades, and a growing card set increase the motivation to replay the game multiple times.

There’s also a meta-progression system with more than 100 unique challenges. This way, you can increase your rank and unlock various bonuses. For example, you’ll receive better resources, new cards, or extra lives.

These challenges are tied to three playable factions: the Duchy, the Order, and the Republic. You’ll receive exclusive faction-specific rewards for completing challenges. To succeed in these challenges, you need to develop a good strategy. Every completed mission contributes to your overall progress.

Steam Release & Platforms

Drop Duchy launches today on May 5, 2025 for PC via Steam. A release on other platforms — such as the Switch — is “not ruled out” according to the developers. The game releases today at 15:00 UTC.
