Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a 2.5D platformer adventure game developed by Playtonic Games, known for their work on Donkey Kong Country. “Capital B” is up to no good again; the buddy duo needs to spring back into action to save the day. Thwart his evil plan of using a “Hivemind” device to enslave an entire kingdom of bees, then take the fight to Capital B’s Impossible Lair!

• Each level brings rich visuals with detail and depth realized in stunning 2.5D.
• The world isn’t just a hub from level to level; it provides a whole separate gaming experience, unlocking more 2D levels by completing objectives and puzzles.
• Even after you finish a level, you can try it in its alternate state, switch a flipboard in the overworld to create new landscapes. Hook up electricity, submerge them in water, freeze, or literally flip them upside down for radically altered challenges!
• Tonics are making their return experience sixty game-modifying tonics, including infinite rolling, harder enemies, and super speed. They can also unlock new environmental and visual effects.
• While players can tackle the Impossible Lair any time, they might find it too much of a challenge without the help of the Royal Beetallion. Free them by completing optional levels, and they will help with taking down Capital B’s dastardly traps!

If you are on PC, you owe it to yourself to pick it up. This is the closest you will get to a Nintendo platformer on the system. The level of love Playtonic has squeezed into this game makes Yooka-Laylee stand firmly on its own two feet.

Its writing might be obnoxious at times and the overworld can be superfluous, but its foundation is so well constructed that it doesn’t distract from the game proper. It might take awhile for it to click. But when it does, you’re gonna have an enthralling time. Hell, I’m going to go play more of it now that I finished this review.

Playtonic has absolutely smashed it with Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. It builds on the team’s experience with platformers and manages to improve on its predecessor in every way. One of the best platformers I’ve played in years.
