Immortals of Aveum is a single-player action-adventure game in a fantasy universe. You play as a battlemage in a first person view and shoot different types of spells which can be unlocked and upgraded throughout the game. In part this may look like a first person shooter but there are both offensive and defensive spells and finding good synergies between spells is key to making combos and gain an upper hand during combat. Apart from regular enemy encounters there will be bosses to defeat, each with different patterns and weaknesses to exploit.
Immortals of Aveum is an upcoming magic based FPS title set to launch in late July of his year. Developed by a newly formed studio comprising of some experienced talents who worked in the original Dead Space and later Call of Duty games, working under EA the team is planning to release this title and hopefully creating a franchise.
The game is set in the fantasy world of Aveum, a world constantly at war over the control and abuse of magic as a war weapon in what they call Everwar. Here the protagonist Jak joins the “resistence” of the elite order of the battlemage, the Immortals to fight of the forces of Sandrakm lead by Rashan. Being able to use all 3 types of magic, thus named TriArch, we’ll thus guide Jak across the story, not only fighting off enemy forces but also unveiling ancient secrets of Aveum, that may help resolve the current situation.
With a very colorful and fastpaced, combat Aveum make use of the often seen color coded magic and likely rock-paper-scissors mechanics that they also bring. The overall feeling is that of more classic shooters of the like of Arena shooters (not as fast though), with mid-air attacks, combos and few attacks resembling hero shooters. Much like the ability to cast a shield (with reduced mobility), a spiked wall to slam enemies onto which can also be combined with the rope attack, being able to pull enemy toward you. Being color coded to red, green, and blue you’ll be able to recognize the attacks despite the chaotic visuals, as well as have at your disposals over 25 spells and 80 unique talents to help your journey.
Moreover as the game is a single player experience only, the team has decided not only to focus on the story but also reward players for exploration, with plenty of puzzles and platforming, as well as secret/hidden bosses which will reward you with useful talents and potentially expand upon the game lore.
All in all the game seems to be a solid experience, but it’s not short of critique. Starting from day-one pre-order bonus which offers essentially a better gaming experience, and the fear of other future power based DLCs. Story seems a bit simplistic, with generic dialogues and overly seen politically correct characters, likely to ruin the experience if it goes too strong on that direction with predictable outcomes (possible betrayals, or enemy being evil just because). And most importantly the system requirements, being totally out of this world , demanding a high-end rig for the recommended system aiming at a 1440p 60fps (whereas other titles could afford high refresh with those one), not to mention midrange system for a 1080p 60fps target with unspecified quality preset (fearing for low-medium) on what seems to be a game based on Unreal Engine 5 and releasing on consoles, including the Series S a machine coming aiming 1080p but with much lower performance than the minimum spec.
While the game seems interesting, I’ll hold off until release as not even EA Originals seems to shake off the bad habits and issues regular EA titles carries with them.
