Fade to Silence is an open-world survival crafting game developed by Black Forest Games, set in a post-apocalyptic world that is frozen in an eternal winter. Step into the shoes of Ash, a natural leader gather the resources necessary to establish a refuge for survival. With dwindling resources, simple tasks like upgrading equipment and collecting materials quickly require an expedition to scavenge the necessary items.

• Navigate a vast territory in which you will encounter eldritch abominations and an even greater foe, the savage winter itself. Freezing temperatures will constantly take their toll on ash. Be careful of blizzards; if caught by surprise, it will take every ounce of skill you have to survive.
• Attract followers to bring them into your refuge. Every skilled individual grants access to higher-tier resources and gear. Without followers, you will only be able to scavenge the barest necessities, crafting only makeshift tools and weapons.
• The dynamic weather system adds to the immersion of survival in a cold, corrupted world. Survival depends on how well you read weather patterns, and if you made the right decision to look for shelter or to press on home.
• Look for tracks in the show; snow displacement leaves a realistic path by both player characters and NPCs. This telltale sign will tell you regions where it is good to hunt and regions where monsters are roaming.

Fade To Silence is a game that pushes all the right buttons, but it doesn’t push some of them quite hard enough. In a survival game, it’s important for hostile threats to be just as important as the resource gathering, management, and base building. The idea is there, the environment is there, but the mechanics are only half there when one half is a rather addictive base management system and the other half is overly simplistic combat.

Hooked Gamers

In my opinion, the game culminates into an expert combination of storytelling, survival, and community management, leaving me quite satisfied with the result. True, there are a lot of survival games out there, and aside from obvious clones, each is trying to find their niche to hopefully push their game, their story, into something more than the standard fare. For me, though not perfect, this game hits that goal. Well done, THQ Nordic.
