Crysis Warhead is an action sci-fi shooter developed by Crytek. It is a standalone DLC expansion of the first Crysis game. Step into the shoes of Sergeant Sykes, a soldier on a mission behind enemy lines. What was a standard mission becomes critical when you discover your enemies captured something of vital importance to the upcoming war.
The original Crysis may have given you the basic tools, but Warhead allows you to really use them, and while its previous titles made it clear that Crytek knew technology like few others, it’s this strange off-shoot Warhead that proves it’s no slouch when it comes to level design and set-pieces either.
Crytek once again proves that its one of the premiere shooter developers in the industry, even if it does get an unfair rep as being “just” a technology company. Comments like that make it seem as if the Crytek had a chip on its shoulder, because it addressed almost every complaint about Crysis and then some. I found Warhead to be challenging, exciting, wild, and, yes, very much full of swagger and fury.
If Warhead has a weakness, it is still in its rather typical near-future science-fiction motif, which compares weakly to more compelling backdrops like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky’s post-apocalyptic battleground. But although its setting is a familiar archetype, its gameplay is a progressive vision that, a year after Crysis shattered boundaries with a new level of open-ended gameplay, continues to be the standard bearer for what this longstanding genre can achieve.
