Larian Studios have spoken at the recent Games Developer Conference about their plans for a Baldur’s Gate 4 and Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC and expansions.
During the recent Games Developer Conference (GDC), Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke spoke about the future of Baldur’s Gate 3 and a possible Baldur’s Gate 4.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has been a massive success since its launch last year, which culminated in it being named Game of the Year for 2023 and considered one of the best RPGs in decades; there’s been a heavy weight on Larian Studios for them to deliver a BG3 DLC or expansion.
Unfortunately for us all, Vincke told the GDCC panel that Larian is moving away from Dungeons & Dragons and will not be the team working on a Baldur’s Gate 4 if that game ever happens.
The news will come as a blow to many, with the studio also not planning on releasing any DLC or expansions for BG3. The plan for Larian is to do something entirely different and leave the Baldur’s Gate IP to Wizards of the Coast.
So, there it is. If there is a Baldur’s Gate 4, it will be developed by an entirely new team. As for Larian, nobody knows where they go from here. There are still some updates to be had for Baldur’s Gate 3, including planned mod support, but I’m sure we’re all going to be excited for the team’s next adventure.
