What is an Sandbox Game ?

A sandbox video game offers the player a significant amount of creativity to tackle challenges, complete objectives, and progress through the game however they wish. The term sandbox can describe games found in many genres, including strategy, simulator, RPG, but more commonly known within the city-building genre. City building games, such as Cities: Skylines, SimCity, and Prison Architect, are commonly considered authentic sandbox games due to a lack of restrictions the player has in playing the game. Another genre in which sandbox-style play seems to be a must is the survival category.
