Deltarune Release: All Info on Gameplay, Chapters & Launch at a Glance

Deltarune is the successor project to Undertale. Undertale is one of the most influential indie games of the last decade. Developer Toby Fox returns with this new title, once again delivering a mix of humor, deep story, and an innovative combat system. The first two chapters were already released as a free demo and have been well received by fans.

Tomorrow, on June 4th, the game will be officially released, bringing new chapters that continue the story and may lead us to one or even several endings. Once again, we can expect a touching narrative with new characters, expanded game mechanics, and an even greater scope than its predecessor. Additionally, Deltarune has a mysterious connection to Undertale, yet it remains a standalone game.

What is Deltarune

Deltarune is an episodic role-playing game by Toby Fox, who created Undertale on his own. While the game shares many characters and visual elements with Undertale, it is not a direct sequel. It features a unique story set in an alternate universe. Fun fact: The title “DELTARUNE” is an anagram of “UNDERTALE,” further emphasizing the close connection between the two games.

Unlike Undertale, Deltarune offers a more linear narrative structure with a fixed story. Still, you can resolve battles peacefully, don’t worry. This maintains a degree of player choice in how you approach the game.

Deltarune is a story-focused role-playing game. It blends classic RPG elements with innovative mechanics like bullet-hell segments where you must dodge attacks. This mix creates dynamic and challenging combat.

Gameplay: How Deltarune Works

Deltarune combines classic turn-based battles with bullet-hell elements. You play as Kris and can choose from various actions in combat: FIGHT, ACT, ITEM, MAGIC, SPARE, and DEFEND. The ACT system lets you interact with enemies by calming or putting them to sleep. MAGIC allows you to use special abilities that consume TP (Tension Points). TP is regenerated by dodging or defending against attacks.

Unlike Undertale, Deltarune features a party system. You control a group of characters, including Kris, Susie, and Ralsei. Although you directly control Kris, you can give commands to the others. Each character has unique abilities and spells. The synergy between party members is crucial for success in battle.

Deltarune places less emphasis on the consequences of your decisions than Undertale did. While Undertale’s choices significantly influenced the story and endings, Deltarune follows a more linear path. Nevertheless, there are minor variations in the story depending on how you handle enemies—whether you fight or aim for peaceful resolutions. There might even be multiple endings.

Release Information

Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4 will launch on June 4th, 2025 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and even the Nintendo Switch 2. Deltarune is one of the launch titles for the Nintendo Switch 2. The first two chapters are part of a free demo, so you can already try out the beginning of the game. The full game will be priced at €24.99. Toby Fox has confirmed that future chapters will be added as free updates.

Conclusion: Is Deltarune Worth It?

Deltarune is not exactly like the beloved Undertale. Toby Fox has revolutionized his concept and created a new episodic RPG. The game blends turn-based combat with bullet-hell elements and gives players the option to solve battles through violence or pacifism. If you enjoyed the free demo, you should definitely check out the full game—and if you haven’t played it yet, now is the perfect time.
