Gameplay: How Deltarune Works

Deltarune combines classic turn-based battles with bullet-hell elements. You play as Kris and can choose from various actions in combat: FIGHT, ACT, ITEM, MAGIC, SPARE, and DEFEND. The ACT system lets you interact with enemies by calming or putting them to sleep. MAGIC allows you to use special abilities that consume TP (Tension Points). TP is regenerated by dodging or defending against attacks.

Unlike Undertale, Deltarune features a party system. You control a group of characters, including Kris, Susie, and Ralsei. Although you directly control Kris, you can give commands to the others. Each character has unique abilities and spells. The synergy between party members is crucial for success in battle.

Deltarune places less emphasis on the consequences of your decisions than Undertale did. While Undertale’s choices significantly influenced the story and endings, Deltarune follows a more linear path. Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4 will launch on June 4th, 2025 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and even the Nintendo Switch 2. Deltarune is one of the launch titles for the Nintendo Switch 2. The first two chapters are part of a free demo, so you can already try out the beginning of the game. The full game will be priced at €24.99. Toby Fox has confirmed that future chapters will be added as free updates.
