Cult of the Lamb: The Board Game Hands-On at SPIEL Essen 2026

Cult of the Lamb has been among the most prominent indie roguelike titles since 2022. The video game seamlessly blends dungeon crawling with the mechanics of building your own cult. This exact concept is now being brought to your tabletop by Paper Fort Games. At SPIEL in Essen, the world’s largest board game trade fair, I had the opportunity to test the board game firsthand this year.

Cult of the Lamb: The Board Game
Key Takeaways
  • Cult of the Lamb: The Board Game combines strategic cult management with dungeon crawling and supports one to four players.
  • At SPIEL Essen 2026, we were able to test the board game and explore its various weapon and upgrade systems.
  • Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, the delivery of the board game is currently scheduled for December 2027.

The core experience revolves around two distinct gameplay phases: base building and dungeon crawling. Each player takes control of their own cult and followers, and the player with the most points at the end secures the victory. However, cooperation within the dungeons is occasionally required.

Paper Fort Games is developing the title in collaboration with Massive Monster and Devolver Digital. The project launched on Kickstarter on July 21, 2026, and its funding period concluded swiftly on August 14, 2026. During this timeframe, approximately £2.61 million was raised from 14,029 backers.

The game can be experienced solo or with up to four players in total. It masterfully combines worker placement, dungeon crawling, and dice-based combat mechanics. The official release and delivery are anticipated for December 2027.

Two Gameplay Phases: Cult Building and Dungeon Crawling

The board game faithfully adapts the two primary gameplay elements from the video game. Each of the four game rounds integrates dungeon crawling and cult management. During the dungeon phase, all players enter the labyrinths together to face a variety of adversaries.

There, players gather rewards that facilitate both their own progression and the continued expansion of their cult. A selection of weapons, tarot cards, and upgrades are available to influence your individual combat strength. At the end of each dungeon, the notorious Bishops of the Old Faith await.

Upon emerging from the dungeon, the base building phase commences. You continuously expand your cult through various upgrades and assign different tasks to your followers. Depending on their strength and upgrades, they will yield additional rewards.

Followers can be deployed to execute diverse tasks, allowing you to amass more resources, upgrade your weaponry, and much more. Your disciples can also be leveled up to tier 3, enhancing the efficiency of their actions and the volume of rewards collected. A strategic balance must be struck between investing resources into your cult immediately and saving them for future necessities.

These two mechanics intertwine seamlessly; depending on the path chosen within the dungeon, you can unlock new followers or acquire the specific resources required for upgrades. In contrast to the video game, each player manages their own distinct followers and cult, placing everyone in direct competition.

Weapons, Tarot Cards, Curses, and Diverse Builds

The combat system is a critical component of the dungeon phase. The damage dealt varies depending on the weapon equipped and its current upgrade level. Each weapon features unique mechanics, opening the door to a multitude of playstyles.

Damage is inflicted by rolling dice. However, identical rolls can result in different damage outputs depending on the weapon. The dice feature damage values, symbols, and stars, which can appear individually, in combinations, or alongside blank faces.

Cult of the Lamb: The Board Game

Take the hammer as an example, which can deliver devastating damage under specific conditions. While most weapons inflict 1 or 2 damage points per rolled damage symbol, the hammer instantly deals 12 damage whenever 3 damage symbols are rolled, often delivering the decisive final blow. The player who inflicts the most damage on an enemy is ultimately rewarded with more points.

To execute an attack, players take turns placing a die on one of the currently engaged monsters. This means a player could allocate a die with two damage symbols to a monster on their first turn, followed by a die with a single damage point on their subsequent turn.

Solo encounters are handled individually, but when multiple players occupy the same room, everyone simultaneously engages the enemies. Once all players have exhausted their dice, the adversaries retaliate, and the next combat round begins. However, as long as a player has inflicted at least some damage to every enemy, they will secure a portion of the points across the board.

Equipment can be tailored to fit your overarching strategy. Tarot cards provide supplementary effects and enhancements during combat. The diverse combinations of weapons and Tarot cards pave the way for highly customized character builds.

Furthermore, each player has access to curses, which can be unleashed to cause supplementary damage. The dice mechanics offer a highly satisfying tactile experience, though mastering all the interconnected systems undoubtedly requires some time.

Four Bishops, Numerous Boss Fights, and the Cult

The four renowned Bishops, alongside an additional boss, make their return as the primary antagonists. Leshy, Heket, Kallamar, and Shamura are drawn directly from the video game. Over the course of a match, players will confront various Bishops, with each encounter escalating in difficulty and yielding unique rewards.

A full game can easily span several hours. If time is limited, players can opt to face just a single Bishop. Alternatively, those seeking a rigorous challenge can tackle Bishop 1, 3, and the final boss, significantly restricting the time available to gather equipment.

Each Bishop is guarded by three distinct minibosses, ensuring a wealth of variety and action. These supplemental boss fights incorporate special rules and take place within a dedicated dungeon setting, where previously accumulated victory points play a crucial role.

Cult of the Lamb: The Board Game

The Cult of the Lamb Board Game features many familiar followers from the video game. Naturally, these followers also produce waste, which can lead to illness or even death, making diligent cleanup a vital necessity. You must constantly weigh which upgrades to prioritize and which tasks to assign to your devoted followers.

Release, Editions, and Potential Expansions

The Cult of the Lamb board game was successfully funded via Kickstarter, and current projections schedule the shipping for December 2027. The standard retail edition is expected to be priced at £60.

The Deluxe Edition was offered during the Late Pledge phase for £119. This premium version includes detailed miniatures of the Bishops and Prophets. Furthermore, your followers are represented by miniatures rather than standard cardboard standees. The package also features a Boss Health Tracker Dial, upgraded dice, and additional exclusive components. Pre-orders and Late Pledges remain accessible via BackerKit.

Based on information gathered during conversations at the trade fair, expansions have not yet been officially announced. However, representatives indicated that the likelihood of future expansions is exceptionally high.

It is important to note that this is not an official confirmation. Content from the Woolhaven DLC may eventually transition to the board game format, though such details will likely only be disclosed after the game’s official release.

Conclusion: Our First Impressions of Cult of the Lamb: The Board Game

Based on my personal evaluation after playtesting the Cult of the Lamb Board Game at SPIEL Essen 2026, the title harbors immense potential. The integrated systems of dungeon crawling and cult management have been exceptionally well-translated into the tabletop medium. The combat sequences, driven by diverse weaponry and the refined dice system, feel highly engaging and rewarding.

The board game remains thoroughly enjoyable even for those unfamiliar with the original video game. Naturally, having a foundation in the digital counterpart enriches the experience further. The downtime between turns is remarkably brief, allowing you to constantly strategize and plan your subsequent moves.

During my specific session, the playthrough was heavily guided, limiting my exposure to the unassisted core gameplay loop. Furthermore, the demo started mid-game, effectively skipping the entire early-game equipment phase. Ahead of its 2027 release, the game will undergo further refinement, shaping up to be an outstanding addition to the collections of both established fans and tabletop enthusiasts.
