Cronos: The New Dawn (CTND) is the new survival horror adventure from Bloober Team. The renowned Polish development team is known for the Layers of Fear series, The Medium, Blair Witch, and many others. But they’re also notably behind the famous remake of Silent Hill 2. This time, the studio brings a new horror adventure set in a dystopian 1980s Poland.
The game has been in development since at least 2021 and was first revealed in October 2024. You play as the Traveler, an agent of the Collective organization. Your goal is to recover the souls of certain individuals to be able to change the future after the disaster known as The Change. Cronos: The New Dawn – PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 Comparison
With the start of Advanced Access for Cronos: The New Dawn, we finally have a first look and feedback from early players. But it also means the embargo has been lifted on pre-launch copies for some outlets and content creators. In particular, we have 20-minute videos, with a comparison between the PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions from ElAnalistaDeBits, where:
- Base PS5: In Quality mode at 30fps 4K (1080p upscale) and Performance at 60fps 4K (1080p upscale)
- Nintendo Switch 2: In Docked mode with a 30fps target at 1080p (upscaled from 635p-540p)
There’s a heavy use of Global Illumination (Lumen) to create a deep, atmospheric effect. But in Performance Mode, even the PS5 sees dips to around 50fps. A particularly important note on NS2, which instead uses a reduced but not entirely absent global illumination. This results in a flatter presentation, and obviously a lower base resolution. But thanks to DLSS upscaling, it still delivers a solid result on NS2.
Cronos: The New Dawn – Early Reviews and Feedback
So, we’re looking at a solid level of performance on PS5, and also on Nintendo Switch 2 despite a few visual sacrifices. The first reviews and critic scores are already placing Bloober’s new experience as pretty solid. Many are convinced especially by the atmosphere and story, but with a gameplay loop that some find monotonous.
This sentiment is partially shared by users, who, especially on PC, were quite disappointed with the game’s performance. The game seems to be hit by the classic issues of UE5. We’re talking disappointing performance on capable hardware, forcing reliance on DLSS and even Frame Gen to get an experience above 60fps. Not to mention the occasional stuttering that is quite annoying in an immersive experience.
In Conclusion
So, the new horror chapter from Bloober seems to have won over many with a chilling experience that boasts a strong atmosphere and an intriguing story. It has solid gameplay, though some find it repetitive. However, on PC, as usual, it seems that UE5 is causing some issues, with the game being even more demanding than Silent Hill 2. And with some performance problems, which we hope the team decides to fix soon.
