It’s a fun and challenging campaign if you want to try and forge a new kingdom for yourself as Belisarius, but the campaign is simply too dumb and easy if you are trying to play in a historical way. All you have to do is declare war on everyone and Justinian will send giant doom stacks all over and defeat all of the armies and capture all of the settlements for you. The only challenge is racing all around the map trying to complete your missions and keeping your wife back home from stabbing you in the back.

Playing as Belisarius, you simply don’t feel like you’re going up against impossible odds trying to restore Rome to its former glory. You just feel like an errand boy with a nagging wife. I’d still recommend the campaign if you’re looking to play as the other kingdoms or a rebellious Belisarius, but avoid it like the plague if you were just interested in the Roman Expedition campaign as you’ll be bored to tears within an hour.
