The Kids We Were is a voxel-based adventure game developed by indie developers GAGEX Co., Ltd. originally released for Android Mobile devices now released everywhere with brand new exclusive features. Set in the late Showa era of Japan, take on the role of Minato as he recently arrives in the small town of Kagami, a particularly ordinary and sleepy suburb in Tokyo, disguised as a simple trip he is secretly looking for his missing father who was last known to be living in this area. He soon finds the first clue to his father’s whereabouts a mysterious notebook left for him specifically titled “The Seven Mysteries.”

It’s a succinct and heartfelt game with a gorgeous aesthetic and an evocative narrative. The Kids We Were seems destined to be a thing that people will overlook, but I really hope that they don’t. The way it taps into both a sense of nostalgia for youth and the Japanese nostalgia for the golden ’80s might not be the most original narrative angle ever, but it’s a story told so well that you won’t be able to put it down.
