About this game

Souldiers is an action platformer with elements of Metroidvania like exploration and Soulslike combat in a pixel art-themed skin developed by Retro Forge, while out fighting for the glory of your kingdom, you and your fellow soldiers are whisked away by a Valkyrie to the lands of Terragaya, a plane that’s halfway between life and the afterlife. You and your compatriots are given the task of locating the guardian in order to move on to the next world. One small problem, you and your compatriots were never actually dead. Battle your way to the heart of the mystery, outwit cunning enemies, solve nefarious puzzles, upgrade your character, and explore every corner of this intricate 16-bit world.

Just in case I haven’t made it clear enough, Souldiers is absolutely a modern-day classic. It’s also in the running for my favorite game of 2022—it’s really just that good. Its engaging level design, gorgeous visual appearance, addictive combat mechanics, and its class-based system give it three times the replayability.

It’s a real testament to the game’s strengths that we’d still give it a recommendation, though perhaps with the caveat that you may want to try it on another platform than Switch, if possible — we really hope that further patches can iron out the issues. At any rate, we’d say Souldiers is certainly worth your time, but maybe this isn’t one to rush out and buy right away.
