Call of Juarez: The Cartel is a western-themed first-person shooter developed by Techland, the sequel to Call of Juarez and prequel to Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. A Mexican drug cartel bombs a U.S. law enforcement agency; as a result, the U.S. government puts together a special task force to bring them down.
It’s invigorating to fulfill a challenge, yanking the experience points from under your comrades’ noses and flaunting your shooting skills. The Cartel is worth playing if you have a buddy or two along for the ride. Otherwise, the potential is hard to see hiding behind all the glitches and obscenities.
It’s depressing to think that Techland took a popular franchise, came up with some brilliant ideas for a new entry, and then botched the execution—but that’s exactly what happened. If you just want to play a competent shooter that doesn’t put you in the military or make you fend off an alien invasion, The Cartel is your game. But if you want a title that makes good on its promise to push the genre forward, you can pass on this one.
As a whole this game is just another first person shooter that tries to incorporate all the standard additions of the popular first person shooters without implementing anything ground breaking. Everything this game attempts has been done before and done better. The original Call of Juarez had something that had not really been explored, particularly in modern titles. Moving into modern times without maximising the modern gunslinger character this is just another run of the mill first person shooter.
