Future Call of Duty Entries Will No Longer Launch Day-One on Game Pass

Microsoft reduces Game Pass prices but confirms future Call of Duty titles will no longer arrive on the service at launch.

Call of Duty Game Pass Launches

Key Takeaways: The Quick Answer

  • Price Reduction: Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass monthly fees have been reduced by $7 and $2.50, respectively, to address affordability concerns.
  • Call of Duty Change: Future Call of Duty titles will no longer launch on Day-One; instead, they will join the service approximately one year after release.
  • Existing Library: Current Call of Duty titles, including Black Ops 7 and Modern Warfare III, will remain available to subscribers despite the policy change.

Game Pass Gets Cheaper But Loses Day-One Call of Duty

Today, big news arrived for Game Pass members as Microsoft officially announced that the Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscriptions have reduced their monthly fees by $7 and $2.50 respectively. This however did not come as a surprise as CEO Asha Sharma very recently said that the service had gotten too expensive.

Since Call of Duty day-one launches were the main reason communicated by Microsoft when it announced the price hike last year, it was its departure from Game Pass that made the price reduction possible. As per the announcement, future Call of Duty titles will no longer release day-one on the service.

Instead, future titles will arrive on the service about a year after release. It’s a compromise that, on paper, works for both sides (well mostly, as some only signed up for Game Pass for CoD). Subscribers get a more affordable plan, while Microsoft regains the ability to fully monetize one of gaming’s biggest franchises at launch.

Since Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision, the two recent Call of Duty releases, Black Ops 6 and 7, both launched directly on Game Pass. The player numbers were high but one must think if this was a good strategy to make the most out of Activision’s biggest IP and a reliable money maker for decades.

There was always some skepticism around putting such a high-earning series into a subscription model immediately at launch. Based on where things have landed, it seems that approach didn’t quite deliver the long-term value Microsoft expected.

For current subscribers, there’s no immediate loss in the existing library. All Call of Duty titles already available will remain accessible. That includes:

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 7
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
  • Call of Duty: Warzone (still free-to-play but Game Pass enables cloud access and extra perks)
