Afterimage is a newly released metroidvania from the chinese team of Aurogon Shanghai, offering a new game in the evergrowing metroidvania, a genre highly appreciated as of late thanks to effort and beautifully crated products from small teams.
The title is heavily inspired by the 2000s 2d Castlevania from which not only features the classic whip among the various weapons along with its animation, but also tons of skills from which definitely sticks out the early backdash power-up. While the “rooms” also feel like Castlevania, there are also more Metroid-like areas with plenty of platforming and lethal zone areas, which need careful maneuvering, on top plenty of backtracking and further exploration.
Here we’ll take the role the of the amnesia girl Renee, in the magical world of Engardin, a world once where order and flow was established by the 4 Goliath created by the hand of mysterious deity, and with humanity their last creation seeking ambition who brought a war to them. Resulting in their demise but also disrupting the order. Renee found herself as the sole survivor from a sudden attack to her village by a mysterious force, deciding thus to try regain both her memories and finding her master Aros who might have some answers. In this journey she’ll encounter a new companion and plenty of people to interact with, shaping the worldbuilding through dialogues and side quest. While venturing through the ruins, with plenty of secrets and treasure to discover, but also brimmed with traps, powerful foes and more. At her disposal she’ll have 2 main weapons, consisting of white weapons of the like of sword, great sword, dual short sword, katanas, whips and scythes each with their own different attack animation and with several variants scattered throughout the map, on top of a sub-weapon of the magic type, in the form of a book, which will allow her to cast an elemental attack. All of which in a beautifully crafted 2d world, with tons of detail and good animation to boot, with over 170 enemies a rooster of 30 bosses to beat.
As such Afterimage has a fierce competitiion which is not helped with some of the issue the title has with a mediocre story not well transitioned in English either and padding in dialogues while also heavily leaning on it, complicated and mostly useless mechanics, backtracking as padding despite being heavily focused on exploration, not well polished optimization with occasional dips that disrupt the gameplay flow for a genre requiring constant framerate, enemies being hp sponge and sometimes not sure where to go, which is altro true for some of the several side quest we’ll receive from the various NPCs.
It fails to set itself apart from the rest, but it’s definitely not a terrible title, especially considering some of the issues can be addressed via updates and tweaking others with the feedback from the community. As is the game is a bit though to sell, especially for the launch price of 24,99€, but at around 10€ as reported here on AKS it could be a decent title for fan of the genre looking for a boss filled game and doesn’t mind backtracking fully the game, while immersing themselves in the really gorgeuos art and pretty nice soundtrack.
