From a recent job posting by Ripple Effect Studios, one of EA’s studios working on the Battlefield series, it seems they are looking for a new VFX Director, indicating a potential new Battlefield project.

Equally significant in the job posting is the search for a Senior 3D Artist to “create the most realistic and exciting destruction effects in the industry,” hinting at a return to the highly beloved high destructibility feature in the series.

Destruction: The Strength of the Battlefield Series

Destructibility has always been a strong point of the Battlefield series, especially since Battlefield 3 in 2011, which introduced an unprecedented level of destruction. This not only provided a different gaming experience each time on the same map, but also allowed for strategic maneuvers. For example, players could destroy specific buildings to flush out enemy forces or create cover zones using debris.

The first signs of destructibility appeared in Battlefield 2 in 2005, with a few destructible walls to open up passages here and there. Bad Company 2 showcased excellent destructibility, varying from some walls and small buildings on certain maps to the ability of bringing down houses, large buildings, and creating significant map changes. With Battlefield 3 and the subsequent Battlefield 4, there was further improvement with the introduction of a dedicated system called Levolution, which remains one of the best examples.

While Hardline and Battlefield 1 saw improvements in destruction effects, there was a step back in terms of organic destruction, removing lots of tactical options. Battlefield V further worsened the situation, with walls and buildings collapsing too uniformly. Lastly, Battlefield 2042 was a disappointment on all fronts.

What to Expect from the Next Battlefield

One of the notable downsides of Battlefield 2042 was the drastic reduction in destruction, a beloved aspect of the series, along with the removal of other previous mechanics. Despite having some interesting and good foundational ideas, Battlefield 2042 did not live up to fan and franchise expectations.

To address this, Ripple Effect is seeking a Special Effects Director to unleash creativity in the realm of destruction, aiming to offer an unprecedented level of destruction. It’s not unlikely that we will see the return of a destruction physics system similar to Levolution. In short, we’ll have to wait and see what DICE and Ripple Effect have in store for the new Battlefield.
