Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja are bringing fresh details on Nioh 3, the highly anticipated third installment of the yokai-themed action RPG series that explores the Bakumatsu Era for the first time!

Nioh 3: The Fall of the Samurai between Yokai and Legendary Figures of the 19th Century

Nioh 3 is the awaited new chapter in the famous action RPG series by Team Ninja, published by Koei Tecmo. The series debuted in 2017 with the first game, bringing an interesting mix of historical events combined with the fantasy element of Yokai. The new chapter was officially announced at the State of Play in June 2025 with a first demo and the confirmation of the launch on 6 February 2026

Nioh 3: The Bakumatsu Era World Revealed

Following the latest updates from Koei Tecmo at the Tokyo Game Show 2025, we finally have new news on the third chapter. With the new entry in the action RPG series by Team Ninja starring the protagonist Tokugawa Takechiyo, unveiling an action-packed adventure through various famous eras of Feudal Japan.

Revealing new details specifically about one of the eras we’ll face, namely the Bakumatsu Period. This coincides exactly with the end of the Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate, and the figure of the samurai. Bringing in new characters, locations, and adversaries.

 

What Awaits Us in 1864 Tokyo

Takechiyo will find himself in a Japan dominated by the Crucible, where Yokai are free to roam. Where the Loyalist forces are in a desperate defense of the Spirit Trees that are still holding back the expansion of the Crucible.

Exploring in particular a Tokyo heavily hit by the distortion. With some locations still recognizable such as Kiyomizu Temple and Honnoji Temple. But with the forces of the Shogunate, the Shinsengumi, armies with swords and firearms using Mibu Temple as a base. As well as new Yokai straight from the Sengoku and Heian periods.

 

Legendary Characters Confirmed

There’s certainly no shortage of new characters enriching the game world, with Team Ninja taking the opportunity to reveal 3 of the new characters we will meet, namely:

  • Takasugi Shinsaku
  • Okita Soji
  • Tokugawa Yoshinobu

Takasugi who leads the Loyalist forces guiding a group of Shocktroopers. Skilled on the field with pistols and sword techniques of the Yagyu Shinkage school. Along with the renowned Okita Soji as Captain of the first Squadron of the Shinsengumi with his legendary mastery of the sword. And finally Tokugawa Yoshinobu, destined to become the 15th Shogun, as skilled in the arts of war as he is in academics.

 

In Conclusion: Adventure through various Eras

Nioh 3 stands as an interesting adventure across various renowned eras of Feudal Japan. All while bringing the classic twist between events with historical figures and that of the Yokai world. With further details coming soon, ahead of the launch on 6 February 2026.
