After the success of its Fallout TV series, Amazon MGM Studios has ordered a new show based on the cult video game franchise, Wolfenstein. The show is reportedly already in development with Patrick Somerville acting as writer, producer, and showrunner.

On the back of the massively successful and popular Fallout TV show, which is getting its second season later this year, executive producers Johnathon Nolan and Lisa Joy are back with their production company Kilter Films to work on a Wolfenstein show.
Nolan and Joy co-created HBO’s Westworld and Amazon’s Fallout show, and will bring their unique approach to weird and challenging narratives to the Wolfenstein TV adaptation, according to Variety.

A dream team for an ambitious project
With Nolan and Joy on board, Amazon will hope for another smash hit after the pair proved themselves more than capable of adapting a video game to TV with Fallout, where they caught the spirit of the franchise, capturing its blend of satire, over-the-top characters, and action-focused narrative.
Patrick Somerville, known for writing Station Eleven, Maniac, and The Leftovers, will act as creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer. As a self-proclaimed fan of the franchise since he was a kid, Somerville hopes to create a faithful adaptation that can replicate the success of Fallout.
As it did with Fallout, where it pulled in Bethesda to help create the show, Amazon has called upon MachineGames, the developer of Wolfenstein: The New Order and Wolfenstein 2: The Colossus, and game designer Jerk Gustaffson to serve as executive producer.
“The story of killing Nazis is evergreen”: a slogan that sets the tone
While Amazon has not revealed any official details, such as story and casting, the show’s tagline, “The story of killing Nazis is evergreen,” suggests a violent and politically incorrect show, keeping in line with themes from the franchise.
Wolfenstein has seen 14 games since Castle Wolfenstein launched for the Apple II in 1981, and with so much content to pull from, the series could follow iconic protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz in an action-packed, explosive adventure through Nazi-occupied America.
The recent games in the series focus on an alternative history in which the Nazis won World War 2, providing an interesting narrative to explore, similar to The Man in the High Castle. Wolfenstein’s explosive action, powerful characters, and rich story all make it ready-made for a screen adaptation.
After Fallout, Amazon establishes itself as the home of video game adaptations
Amazon has been expanding its IPs in recent years. Its success from Fallout has seen the company demand more games from the world of video games, with Mass Effect, Warhammer 40,000, God of War, and now Wolfenstein confirmed to be in development.
Fan expectations, and Amazon’s expectations, are high following Fallout, and while much of the Wolfenstein series details are still under wraps, the creative team Amazon has in place gives everyone cause for optimism.
Conclusion
Amazon is adapting cult video game franchise Wolfenstein into a TV series, hoping to build on the success of the recent Fallout show. Building a strong creative team consisting of Johnathon Nolan and Lisa Joy, co-creators of the Fallout show, and Patrick Somerville, the writer of Station Eleven, Amazon is hoping for another massively successful TV adaptation of a popular gaming franchise.
