Following the aggressive price hikes of late 2025, a leaked memo from Asha Sharma, published by The Verge, suggests that the company is looking to shift to a more “flexible system.”

Why is Xbox Game Pass changing its strategy now?

Xbox is pivoting because the current monthly cost has reached a saturation point where player churn threatens to outpace new sign-ups.

While the 40-million-user milestone is impressive, the “too expensive” admission from CEO Asha Sharma confirms that the premium model cannot sustain the next 40 million.

The “flexible system” mentioned in recent internal communications points toward a future of modular subscriptions.

We are likely looking at the introduction of ad-supported tiers or “lite” versions of the service that strip away cloud gaming or PC access to lower the barrier to entry.

A flexible system likely introduces a tiered hierarchy designed to capture the “budget-conscious” segment that the 2025 price hike alienated.

Currently, the official storefront markup for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate sits at a steep £22.99 ($29.99 / €26.99) per month. For many, this is no longer a “no-brainer” add-on but a major monthly utility bill.
