Microsoft is testing paid hourly tiers for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Find out how much extra playtime will cost once the new Game Pass limits are reached.
- Microsoft is testing three paid hourly tiers for Xbox Cloud Gaming, ranging from $3.99 for 10 hours to $11.99 for 50 hours.
- These non-expiring playtime blocks are currently exclusive to Xbox Insiders as an introductory test before next month’s wider rollout.
- Purchasing these extra hours guarantees an ad-free streaming experience and shorter wait times once standard Game Pass limits are reached.
Microsoft is changing how we access Xbox Cloud Gaming, moving it away from a Game Pass exclusive and turning it into a standalone timed product. We knew these changes were coming after last month’s announcement about upcoming playtime limits for current subscribers. Now, we finally have some hard numbers on what buying extra cloud time will actually cost.
Xbox Cloud: New Pricing Tiers and Limits
Starting next month, cloud playtime limits will be enforced for most Game Pass members, shifting the service into a paid format. There is, however, an exemption to this rule as due to tight consumer protection laws in some countries, the cloud playtime cap does not affect Game Pass members with a recurring policy in Australia, Brazil, France, and Germany. In those specific regions, the cap only applies to new purchases. For everyone else, reaching the limit means you will need to purchase extra time.
Microsoft is currently testing three introductory price points for Xbox Insiders:
- 10hrs for $3.99
- 25hrs for $7.99
- 50hrs for $11.99
Purchasing these tiers provides an ad-free experience with high-quality streaming and shorter wait times. There is no expiration on these blocks so your playtime remains available on your account until it is completely used. Because this is still an early test within the Insider community, these introductory rates may not reflect the final pricing we see next month.
This is the second cloud-related initiative being tested in the Insiders community, following the free ad-supported cloud gaming test deployed last July.
While cloud gaming as we know it will stop being an unlimited perk for Game Pass members, this shift opens the service up to everyone who doesn’t have a subscription. With more people choosing to play via the cloud, setting it up as a separate product does make sense moving forward.
The main question now is how these prices will look when the plans become more widely available next month. For now, the $3.99 entry point is not bad…unless you’re already paying for Game Pass.
