WayForward Teases the Next Mainline Entry at Anime Expo 2026
The long-running platforming Shantae franchise is officially moving toward its next major chapter. During Los Angeles Anime Expo 2026, California-based developer WayForward Technologies shared a promotional artwork teaser for the next Shantae title.
The social media announcement featured the iconic half-genie protagonist with a subtly updated aesthetic. Accompanying the artwork was the text “All-new tales of Shantae” alongside a clear “Coming 2027” launch window.
This update follows the project’s preliminary announcement. The seventh entry was initially revealed in late 2025 by series director Matt Bozon during the LRG3 showcase, though details remained scarce at the time.

When Will the New Shantae Game Release and on What Platforms?
The upcoming seventh mainline Shantae game is scheduled for release in 2027, as officially confirmed by WayForward at Anime Expo 2026. While the studio shared a teaser image confirming the launch window, specific target platforms, the final title, and gameplay details remain unannounced.
The studio has historically supported a wide array of systems for its releases. For context, the most recent franchise release, Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution, launched in August 2025 across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
Given the 2027 timeline, industry analysts expect a full gameplay reveal, title announcement, and platform list to surface late this year or in early 2027 through major digital showcases.
From Game Boy Color to 3 Million Copies: A 25-Year Legacy
The Shantae franchise has maintained a dedicated community for nearly a quarter of a century. The series debuted in 2002 on the Game Boy Color, navigating a difficult market transition period before finding widespread critical acclaim.
The series achieved mainstream independent success with the 2010 release of Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on the Nintendo DS. This entry established the signature loop of side-scrolling platforming, hand-drawn animations, and light Metroidvania exploration.
To date, the franchise has accumulated over 3 million copies sold worldwide across six distinct installments. The 2025 launch of Risky Revolution—originally a canceled 2004 Game Boy Advance project—demonstrated WayForward’s commitment to preserving the history of Sequin Land.

What to Expect From Shantae 7
While explicit gameplay mechanics remain under wraps, the teaser implies a narrative continuation of Shantae’s adventures. Players can expect the traditional mix of hair-whip combat and magical transformations that define the character’s toolkit. Many fans have noticed Shantae’s new hairstyles, with each hairstyle potentially representing a different new power for the half-genie.
The previous artwork from 2025 also highlighted a redesign for the series‘ recurring antagonist, the pirate Risky Boots, signaling that the core conflict of the franchise remains intact. WayForward is expected to share formal development updates as milestones approach.
