The bodycam shooter Unrecord, which broke the internet with its hyperrealism, is officially no longer a tiny indie project. Tencent has acquired a minority stake in developer Drama Studios, leading a new funding round that dramatically scales up the game’s development ambitions and budget.

Drama Studios says Tencent’s investment in Unrecord will allow it to fully commit to “delivering a single-player FPS defined by hyperrealism, immersive gameplay, and engaging storytelling.”
The developer has informed fans in a post on X that, now that it has funding, it will “finally share updates in 2026 that reflect our true final vision.”
Why Unrecord is Making Headlines
The initial trailer for Unrecord went viral, racking up millions of views, prompting many viewers to question whether the footage was real or simply an elaborate hoax. That level of photorealistic detail immediately positioned the game as one of the most anticipated titles on Steam.
This new investment from industry giant Tencent guarantees the studio now has the resources necessary to deliver the high-caliber, first-person shooter experience fans now expect. The project is officially in full production with an expanding team.
Drama Studios’ Journey: From Bedrooms to Backing
Beginning as a small team, the studio was founded by two developers with limited prior industry experience. They described themselves as “two bedroom programmers” who created the viral trailer just six months into development.
The project gained a significant head start with a $2.5 million seed investment from The Games Fund in 2024. However, the recent Series A funding, led by Tencent, transforms the studio’s scale.
Looking ahead, the team has already expanded from two to ten developers and has revealed it is actively recruiting more talent to accelerate the process.

encent’s Investment Scales the Hyperreal Shooter
This investment is a commercial game-changer for Unrecord. Tencent’s VP of Partnerships, Mark Maslowicz, acknowledged the studio’s “significant advancements… despite their small size and limited resources.”
Maslowicz says Tencent been “consistently impressed” by the “remarkable progress” Drama Studios has made and that the latest investment will allow the studio to “unlock their full potential.”
The Future Vision for the FPS Game
Tencent’s investment in Unrecord and Drama Studios removes the single biggest risk factor for any indie hit: the fear of running out of money before the vision can be fully executed.
We can now expect a deeply immersive, high-quality FPS defined by engaging storytelling and next-level graphics, with the developer promising more updates in 2026. Do you think Drama Studios can pull off its long-term vision?
